A HAPPY HEART

Date: August 2

Category: Divine Healing

Proverbs 17:22
"A happy heart is good medicine and a cheerful mind works healing, but a broken spirit dries up the bones."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiWhen we are sick, the first tendency we have is to go to the Lord in prayer. Secondly, we have the tendency to go and see a doctor. If necessary, the doctor will prescribe us with some medication. If we take that medication, then it's supposed to attack the virus in our bodies and stop it from spreading or becoming worse. Then our bodies are supposed to recover to complete health. But aside from physical medication, this verse teaches us that there is a greater form of medication that will strengthen our health. Actually, researchers are even discovering this type of medication in modern medicine as well.

It says in the first part of verse 22, "A happy heart is good medicine." The heart of a person represents that person's thoughts, feelings, and emotions. So really, the heart represents the person. So a happy person is good medicine! There is a German saying that says, "He who laughs lives longer." Doctors have discovered that 10 minutes of laughter a day is tremendously good for our health. When we have a belly laugh, meaning we laugh out of our hearts and we're not just forcing laughter out, then we relieve a lot of stress that we've accumulated throughout the day. That time of laughter will have a healing effect on the rest of our bodies.

That's why it says here that a happy heart is good medicine. So in the same way you would take the medication that your doctor prescribes to you, take this Word of God as your medication as well. Have a happy heart! Allow yourself to have fun during the day. Stop and smell the roses! Spend time with God, enjoying His presence and allowing Him to strengthen you. Spend time with your family and enjoy their company and conversation. Even spend time outside and enjoy the fresh air and nature. Watch some funny videos with your family. All of those things will give you a happy heart.

Then the second part of verse 22 says, "and a cheerful mind works healing…" In other words, when your mind is joyful and you are thinking about positive things then you will bring healing into your body. Many people destroy their health and their lives because they think negatively. People often die because of depression. Everything begins in the mind. If you decide to live with negative thoughts, then you'll live a miserable life. But if you decide to have cheerful thoughts, then you'll live a healthy life. If we read the second part of this verse, "but a broken spirit dries up the bones," then we can see that the opposite is true also. A broken spirit will physically dry up your bones. So your knees, your ankles, and all your bones will begin to dry up. They will begin to weaken and eventually you may lose the ability to use those bones if you have a crushed spirit.

I know a person who has a crushed spirit. She's 60 years old. She has one daughter and five grandchildren, but she acts like she doesn't have any family. She never sends them cards or gifts for their birthdays or for Christmas. I once asked her why she doesn't do that and her response was, "Oh, I don't have money to send!" Yet, she smokes, drinks, and gambles. She lives a very miserable life. She has said to me that her knees and ankles are starting to give out. She even needs surgery to replace those bones because they are starting to rot. So this woman is so crushed in her spirit that her bones have actually dried up. Yet, she's only 60 years old.

I know another woman is who about 71 years old. She has a son and five grandchildren, and she is very active in their lives. She's a very generous woman. She loves her son, her daughter-in-law, and all her grandchildren. She always sends them Christmas and birthday cards and gifts. She has a very cheerful heart and mind. Even though she is over a decade older than the other woman, she is in better health. Her bones are much stronger. So her cheerful mind has brought healing to her body and has kept her in good health.

We can clearly see the difference between having a cheerful heart and mind versus having a crushed spirit. So if you want to be healthy and have strong bones, then obey this Bible verse. Be a happy person, with a cheerful mind. Be a generous and loving person. Don't neglect your family or loved ones. Don't allow your spirit to become crushed. Live joyfully because as it says here, your happy heart is good medicine and your cheerful mind will work healing into your body.
