Proverbs 8:12-14
"I, Wisdom [from God], make prudence my dwelling, and I find out knowledge and discretion. The reverent fear and worshipful awe of the Lord [includes] the hatred of evil; pride, arrogance, the evil way, and perverted and twisted speech I hate. I have counsel and sound knowledge, I have understanding, I have might and power."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiIn this passage, we read about what wisdom will give us. It's interesting to notice that the things wisdom gives us are the very things that every person on the face of this earth would like to have. Everybody would like to have counsel, sound knowledge, understanding, might, and power. But wisdom is the only thing that can give us those things. So let's read through this passage and explore how we can gain wisdom and how that wisdom will give us the very things that all people long for.

Verse 12a says, "I, Wisdom [from God], make prudence my dwelling…" First and foremost, we have to understand that wisdom comes from God, nowhere else. Then we have to understand that wisdom dwells within the person who is prudent. Being prudent means being careful with your actions. It means thinking of a proper action that will bring about a good result, and then acting in that way. That's what it means to be prudent. If you are a prudent person, then wisdom will dwell with you. Then it says that wisdom will "find out knowledge and discretion." Having discretion means having good judgment about things. So if you are wise, not only does that mean you are a prudent person, but it also means that you are someone who seeks out knowledge and good judgment.

Then in verse 13a we read, "The reverent fear and worshipful awe of the Lord [includes] the hatred of evil…" If we have reverence toward God and if we worship Him, then we will hate evil. We will hate the very sight or even thought of evilness. The rest of verse 13 describes some of the evil things that we should hate. For example, pride is a sign of evilness. A prideful person thinks he is better than everyone else. Actually pride is the primeval sin, the first sin that was ever committed. The devil was prideful, and because he thought he could become like God, he was cast out of heaven. We see from many different examples, both in the Scriptures and in life, that pride is always followed by destruction and downfall. So we are to hate pride.

Not only that, but we're also supposed to hate arrogance. An arrogant person is an egotistic person, a person who thinks he knows everything when he doesn't. We are to hate arrogance. Also, we are to hate the evil way, meaning we are to hate every path of direction that is evil or leads to evilness. Then it says that we are to hate perverted and twisted speech, meaning we are to hate lies, slanderous words, words that are corruptible, words that are ungodly, etc. Hating all those evil things come from reverential and worshipful fear of the Lord. And all of that is connected to having wisdom.

Then in verse 14 we read, "I have counsel and sound knowledge, I have understanding, I have might and power." These are the things that all people want. We all want to have counsel and sound knowledge. We all want understanding, might, and power. But those things only come from having wisdom. And that wisdom comes from seeking God. So we have to seek God first if we want to have wisdom and all those things that wisdom brings. In verse 18 we read, "Riches and honor are with me, enduring wealth and righteousness (uprightness in every area and relation, and right standing with God)." So riches and honor are with wisdom as well. Some people seek for riches and honor, but they don't seek God. Yet He is the One who will give us wisdom. Once He gives us wisdom, then all of those other things will come: riches, honor, counsel, sound knowledge, understanding, might, and power, etc.

In Proverbs 24:14 we read, "So shall you know skillful and godly Wisdom to be thus to your life; if you find it, then shall there be a future and a reward, and your hope and expectation shall not be cut off." In other words, wisdom will provide you with a future and a hope. There are many great things that wisdom will provide us with. But all of those things are rewards for having wisdom. That's why it's so important to straighten our priorities. We should never put our focus on gaining riches and honor. We should put our focus on seeking God and gaining skillful and godly wisdom. Riches and honor are a gift from God because we have first sought after Him and His wisdom. So really, wisdom is the key to being successful in life. Today, let's make sure our priorities are right. Let's make God and His wisdom our first priority. When we have that, everything else will come as a reward!
