FAVOR OF MAN

Date: July 23

Category: Godly Character

Proverbs 3:3-4
"Let not mercy and kindness [shutting out all hatred and selfishness] and truth [shutting out all deliberate hypocrisy or falsehood] forsake you; bind them about your neck, write them upon the tablet of your heart. So shall you find favor, good understanding, and high esteem in the sight [or judgment] of God and man."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiIn Luke 2:52 we read, "And Jesus increased in wisdom (in broad and full understanding) and in stature and years, and in favor with God and man." An important thing to notice is that even Jesus had to increase in wisdom and in favor with both God and man. So if Jesus needed the favor of God and man, so do we. That's why we read here in Proverbs 3:4, "So shall you find favor, good understanding, and high esteem in the sight [or judgment] of God and man." First and foremost, we need favor with God, but along with that, we also need the favor of people. We live in a society with other people and that's why we need favor from them.

For example, when Nehemiah first heard about the situation in Jerusalem, he prayed to God for favor. In Nehemiah 1:11b we read, "I pray You, Your servant this day and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was cupbearer to the king." He asked God to grant him favor with the king so that the king would allow him to go back and rebuild the wall of Jerusalem. Then in Nehemiah 2:8b we read, "And the king granted what I asked, for the good hand of my God was upon me." So we all have to ask God for favor, both with Him and with man.

But in order to have the favor of God, we need to line up our lives to the will of God. Our words and our actions need to be in accordance to the Word of God. But in order to receive the favor of man, what else do we need to do? Well Proverbs 3:3 says, "Let not mercy and kindness [shutting out all hatred and selfishness] and truth [shutting out all deliberate hypocrisy or falsehood] forsake you; bind them about your neck, write them upon the tablet of your heart."

In other words, we have to be merciful, kind, and truthful to others. When we are merciful and kind, we will shut out all hatred and selfishness. Mercy is an interesting thing. Mercy means withholding punishment from someone even though it deserves to be administered. For example, parents can show mercy upon their children by not disciplining them on some occasions even though they deserved to be disciplined. It's the same way with God. He forgives us of our sins even though we don't deserve to be forgiven. So just as God is merciful, we have to be merciful as well. We also have to shut out hatred. The only hate we should have should be directed towards sin, never any person. And we should always be selfless, meaning we should think of other people's needs along with our own. Then to be truthful means to shut out all deliberate hypocrisy and falsehood, meaning your words and your actions should always be honest.

These three traits (mercy, kindness, and truthfulness) are so important if you want to have the favor of God and of people. You cannot have the favor of people if you don't have these three qualities. If you aren't merciful, or if you are selfish, or if you lie to people, then you cannot gain their favor. So according to verse 3b, God wants you to take that mercy, kindness, and truthfulness and "bind them about your neck, write them upon the tablet of your heart." In other words, He wants us to carry these traits everywhere we go. He wants us to have these traits so deeply rooted within our hearts that they become who we are. When that happens, then it says in verse 4, "So shall you find favor, good understanding, and high esteem in the sight [or judgment] of God and man." When your character becomes merciful, kind, and truthful, then you will receive the favor of God and the favor of man.

An important thing to remember is that your relationship with people will reflect what kind of relationship you have with God. If you're not in right standing with people, then you can't be in right standing with God. If you're in right standing with God, then you must be in right standing with people. You cannot have one without the other. In the same sense, if you have the favor of God, then you will have the favor of people as well. But you have to remember these three qualities: mercy, kindness, and truthfulness. Write these three things on the tablet of your heart. Once they become a part of who you are, then you'll receive favor!
