WHEN WE MAKE HIM LORD

Date: July 19

Category: The Goodness of God

Psalm 144:12-15
"When our sons shall be as plants grown large in their youth and our daughters as sculptured corner pillars hewn like those of a palace; when our garners are full, affording all manner of store, and our sheep bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our pastures; when our oxen are well loaded; when there is no invasion [of hostile armies] and no going forth [against besiegers – when there is no murder or manslaughter] and no outcry in our streets; happy and blessed are the people who are in such a case; yes, happy (blessed, fortunate, prosperous, to be envied) are the people whose God is the Lord!

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiWe all have our own personal views about what happiness is. As human beings, we are all in search for happiness and fulfillment in our lives. But these passages give us a real picture of what happiness is. Verses 12-14 describe what it means to be happy. Verse 15 explains that that happiness comes from God. When we go beyond making God our Savior (the One who forgave us of our sins), and make Him our Lord (the One who now rules and governs our lives), then we will experience happiness. But let's first examine what happiness is.

In verse 12 it says, "When our sons shall be as plants grown large in their youth and our daughters as sculptured corner pillars hewn like those of a palace." You don't need to go far to find happiness in life. Just look at your own children. Each and every child is a blessing from God. Actually in Psalm 127:3 it says, "Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward." Then we read in Psalm 127:5a, "Happy, blessed, and fortunate is the man whose quiver is filled with them!" So all children are a blessing. In this case, children who are growing up to become large and mighty are a reflection of happiness. Our sons growing in their youth and our daughters becoming beautiful as the palace pillars all show us a picture of blessing.

Then we read in verse 13, "When our garners are full, affording all manner of store, and our sheep bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our pastures." That's another depiction of happiness – financial prosperity. A garner is a place where you store things. In this verse, it says that when your garners are full, meaning you have a lot stored up then you are blessed. When your sheep bring forth thousands and ten thousands more, meaning when your wealth keeps increasing and multiplying, then you're blessed. Verse 14a is also very similar. "When our oxen are well loaded…" So economic prosperity is another example of how we are happy in life.

So family is the first picture of blessing. Then prosperity is the second picture. It's important not to confuse the order of priority of the two. Family is always more important than money. But after family and after money, there is also another picture of blessing that we can read about in this passage. Verse 14b says, "..when there is no invasion [of hostile armies] and no going forth [against besiegers- when there is no murder or manslaughter] no outcry in our streets." So when we are all living at peace with one another, we are blessed. When there's no invasion, meaning there's no war, and when there's no murder or manslaughter and outcries in the streets, then we are happy. So peace is an important part of blessing. When there is peace in your home, peace in your city, and peace in your country, that is a picture of happiness and blessing.

Then we read in verse 15, "Happy and blessed are the people who are in such a case; yes, happy (blessed, fortunate, prosperous, to be envied) are the people whose God is the Lord!" So according to this passage, family, prosperity and peace are the three settings of happiness. And it says in the second part of verse 15 that in order to be blessed in those three areas, we need to have God as our Lord. We need the presence of God in our lives. We will have His presence in our lives when we worship Him alone. God reveals Himself in the Old Testament as Yahweh, the God who is, and He reveals Himself in the New Testament as Jesus, the Messiah. Actually in John 10:10b Jesus said, "I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows)." So God is the One who gives us happiness in life.

Deep in our hearts, we all want to have a blessed family, prosperity in our finances and peace in our cities and countries. But not all of us have made Jesus our Lord. He is the true source of happiness. So do you want to have a happy life? Do you want a blessed family, more than enough financially, and peace in your city and country? Then make God the Lord of your life because that's where that happiness will come from. All the happiness you will ever experience comes from Jesus being your Lord. So today, let's make sure He is our Lord. Let's make sure He has complete rule over our lives. Then we will be blessed and happy!
