SEARCH ME, O GOD

Date: July 16

Category: Godly Character

Psalm 139:23-24
"Search me [thoroughly], O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there is any wicked or hurtful way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiAs you read the entire psalm, it's a bit strange to find a statement like this appearing after this psalmist makes all kinds of confessions about God's sovereignty. In verse 2 he says that God knows when he lays down and when he rises up and even understands all his thoughts. In verse 4 he says that there is not a single word on his tongue, even unuttered, that the Lord doesn't already know about. In verse 8 he says that wherever he should go whether he ascends into heaven or makes his bed in the place of the dead, God is still there. God even formed all his inward parts and knitted him together in the womb of his mother, this psalmist says in verse 13. Then in verse 17 he says that God's thoughts toward him are so great and precious. So we can see here that God sees all, hears all, and He knows all. He is sovereign.

So if this psalmist is so confident that God is everywhere and knows everything, then why does he still say in verses 23, "Search me [thoroughly], O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts"? Well he says that because he doesn't find security in himself. He finds security in God. Even if he's done all that is righteous, he still needs to ask God to search him. Even though we may think we've done all that is righteous, we still have to ask God to search us. God sees all and knows all but we still have to ask Him to search us so that He can reveal things to us that we may not see or know about ourselves. But what are the two things that this psalmist asks God to search? His heart and his thoughts!

Who we are is really determined by what's in our hearts. What's in our hearts will influence what our thoughts are going to be. So our being is made up of those two things – our heart and our thoughts. If you ever want to know what a person is like, just ask him questions and listen to his responses. The things that are important in his heart will reveal themselves through his words. The things that he is pondering about will come out through his words as well. Your words, which are influenced by your heart and your thoughts, will determine who you are and will even determine your destiny. That's why it's so important to speak the right words. In order to speak the right words, we must have the right things in our hearts and thoughts. For that to happen, we have to ask God to search us.

Then we read in verse 24, "And see if there is any wicked or hurtful way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." Not only should we ask God to search our hearts and thoughts, but we should also ask Him to reveal any kind of wickedness or hurtful ways in us that needs to be removed. That way He can lead us in the way everlasting, meaning God will lead and guide us in the path that is forever. That's why this psalmist is asking God to search him and know his heart and thoughts. And that's why we should do the same thing. We shouldn't find assurance in ourselves, but we should find it in God.

It's so important to ask God to lead and guide us in every area of our lives whether it is decisions with career, spouse, children, money, etc. We need God in every decision of our lives, both minor and major choices. All of our decisions are important because they will all have some kind of effect in our futures. That's why we need God to help us make all the right decisions. But for that to happen, we must first ask Him to search us and know our hearts and our thoughts. Then we have to ask Him to reveal any wickedness in our hearts and remove it. After that, He will be able to lead us in the way everlasting, the way that is pleasing in His sight.
