THE WORD IS FOREVER

Psalm 119:96
"I have seen that everything [human] has its limits and end [no matter how extensive, noble, and excellent]; but Your commandment is exceedingly broad and extends without limits [into eternity]."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis verse is found in the magnificent chapter of Psalm 119, the longest chapter of the Bible. This great psalm teaches us about the greatness of the Word of God. Anytime you need to revive your love for the Word, read Psalm 119. It will refresh your soul and remind you of all the benefits that God brings to you through His Word. In this particular verse, the psalmist compares the greatness of the Word of God to everything else. He realizes that everything else has a limit, but God's Word is limitless.

In my life, I've done many things. I've spent four years as an auto mechanic. I was a pastor at one point. I was a teacher for a Bible College. I was a residential superintendent. I studied theology for twelve years, earning three Master Degrees and doing doctoral studies in Old Testament at the University of Toronto. I've been married since 1984. I've been involved in fulltime ministry and television ministry since 1991. I've written books on marriage, raising children, and even finances. I've done many things in my life. But when I compare those experiences to the experiences that I gain while reading the Word of God for the 27th time from cover to cover by now, there is no comparison. My experiences through God's Word are far better than any other kind of experience I could have.

Reading and meditating upon the Word of God is the most important thing in my life. Everything else that I do is influenced by that time alone with God. I will venture to say that the most important thing that you could do in your life is read and mediate upon the Word of God.

We are often taught to invest in things that are long-term. We are told to invest in things that will benefit us in the long run. Well investing in the Word of God is the best investment you could make. The Word of God is eternal and when you invest into something that's eternal, then you will reap the benefits for all eternity. But as we read in this verse, everything else has an end. "I have seen that everything [human] has its limits and end [no matter how extensive, noble, and excellent]."

Throughout history, we have seen many civilizations arise. But at some point, all of them have crumbled. They have all died out regardless of how big and extensive they were. For example, the Roman Empire was a huge and powerful civilization and yet it still found its end. Even this western civilization that we live in today will eventually find its end as well. Even large companies and corporations have fallen a part. Even history's greatest leaders and most influential people of society have all died. These are all human things and eventually must come to an end. We read this in Hebrews 9:27, "And just as it is appointed for [all] men once to die, and after that the [certain] judgment." So God has appointed an end for all things.

There is one exception to that, which we can read in 1 Thessalonians 4:15, "For this we declare to you by the Lord's [own] word, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord shall in no way precede [into His presence] or have any advantage at all over those who have previously fallen asleep [in Him in death]." Those who are still alive when Christ returns will not experience physical death. But when Christ comes, the dead in Christ shall rise first. Then verse 17 says, "Then we, the living ones who remain [on the earth], shall simultaneously be caught up along with [the resurrected dead] in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and so always (through the eternity of the eternities) we shall be with the Lord!" Other than that, everything else has an end.

As we continue to read on in this psalm, it then says, "but Your commandment is exceedingly broad and extends without limits [into eternity]." This portion of the verse in the German translation, Hoffnung fuer Alle, (which means, ‘hope for all') says, "Your Word stays forever." So when everything on this earth comes to an end, the Word of God is the only thing that will remain.

So if you want to live for eternity, then put the Word of God in your heart. God's Word is so extensive and so exceedingly broad that it will bring something of eternal value from heaven right into our human existences. That's why we need to abide in the Word. So today, let's determine to put as much of God's Word in our hearts as possible. Let's read it, believe it, speak it, and do it! When we do that, we will be like the Word and last forever.
