MY WHOLE BEING SHALL BE SATISFIED

Date: June 23

Category: Satisfied in God

Psalm 63:5-8
"My whole being shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips when I remember You upon my bed and meditate on You in the night watches. For You have been my help, and in the shadow of Your wings will I rejoice. My whole being follows hard after You and clings closely to You; Your right hand upholds me."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiDavid is the psalmist here and in this psalm he is rejoicing in the Lord. He says in verse 5a, "My whole being shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness…" Your whole being is really your heart; it's really who you are. Who you are as a person is not determined by the things you have, but by your heart. So in this passage, David acknowledges that his heart will be satisfied as with marrow and fatness. As human beings, we all long for satisfaction in life. We are constantly searching for something to fully satisfy us.

Many people in life are very unsatisfied. A lot of people think that buying a house will bring them satisfaction. And it usually does but only for a moment. Soon after, they are unsatisfied with the little details of that house. They don't like the location of it, the mortgage, the electricity payments, the neighbors, etc. They always find faults in that house because that house cannot satisfy them.

Some people think that if they marry the right person they'll be satisfied in life. Often they do meet someone suitable and then get married. But not long after the wedding, they find things wrong with their spouses; they become unhappy with that spouse and unsatisfied. Marriage is a blessing but it won't completely satisfy your entire being.

Other people think that having children will bring them satisfaction. I remember when I first got the news that my wife was pregnant. I was overflowed with joy and gladness. But after our baby was delivered and brought home from the hospital, she didn't know how to be quiet. She didn't know how to sleep through the night. She needed attention 24 hours a day. I realized how tiring parenting was. Having children brings great joy to our hearts but it won't bring full satisfaction in life.

The only thing that can give true satisfaction to your whole being is God. All the things that I mentioned earlier do give some satisfaction but they don't satisfy the whole being. God is the only One who can satisfy our hearts completely.

So in this psalm, David is acknowledging that God satisfies his whole being. He says in the second part of verse 5, "and my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips." So when you are fully satisfied in the Lord, then your actions will show it. Your mouth will praise the Lord, and there will be gladness and joy on your lips.

But how do we receive satisfaction in God? Well let's read on in the chapter to see. In verse 6 we read, "When I remember You upon my bed and meditate on You in the night watches." So it's important to always remember the Lord and meditate upon Him, especially at night when you go to bed. When you go to bed, what do you think about? What does your mind chew upon? Is it the Lord? Or is it the cares of this life? It's important to remember God as your first priority and your source of happiness.

Once you do that, once you remember the Lord as the One who has been your help, then you will rejoice in the shadow of His wings, it says in verse 7. So satisfaction comes from remembering God and rejoicing in the shadow of His wings, which is really His presence. The presence of God is really where we receive satisfaction in life. But how can we dwell in God's presence? Well let's read on.

In verse 8 it says, "My whole being follows hard after You and clings closely to You; Your right hand upholds me." So God's presence is found when we follow hard after Him and cling closely to Him. That includes praying, reading the Word, meditating upon the Word, and obeying the Word of God. That's how we will have the presence of God in our lives and that's how we will have full and true satisfaction.

Our whole beings will be satisfied when our whole beings begin to follow hard after the Lord. The reason why David found fulfillment in life was because he made God his first priority in life. His entire being sought after God, followed God, and obeyed what God said. Because he did that, God satisfied his heart. We need to do that too if we want to be satisfied in the Lord. This is such a wonderful reflection of how our entire beings can receive full satisfaction. It's only found in God.
