Category: Trust in God

Psalm 56:10-11
"In God, Whose word I praise, in the Lord, Whose word I praise, in God have I put my trust and confident reliance; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?"

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis passage starts with a statement of confidence and trust, which is really a statement of faith. When you put your trust in someone, it means that you believe that person will do exactly what he says. For example, if you make an appointment to meet somebody, then you expect that person to be there when you show up. That expectation you have is your trust in that person. But if that person doesn't meet the appointment, then you know you can't trust him.

A person you trust is a person you believe will do what he says he will do. Now there are some people that you can trust more than others. But God is someone you can fully trust all the time. You can rest assured that God will never fail you. He will always do everything He said He would do.

It says in verse 11, "In God have I put my trust and confident reliance…" In other words, the Psalmist is saying that he has laid all his trust in God. So whenever God says He will do something, we can count on Him to do it. If God says that He is going to bless you, then He will bless you. If God says that He is going to heal you, then He will heal you. That's what it means to put your confident reliance in someone.

An interesting thing to notice from these passages is that faith and trust are really expressed in two different ways. In verse 10 we read, "In God, Whose word I praise, in the Lord, Whose word I praise." So one way we express our faith is by praising the Lord and His Word. In other words, our faith is revealed when we praise Him because we have trust in our hearts that God's Word is truth.

Then it says in verse 11b, "What can man do to me?" So the second way to express our trust in the Lord is by not being fearful of man. We should never walk in fear; instead we should walk by faith. You and I have feelings but those feelings fluctuate. They go up and down. You cannot rely on your feelings.

Instead of looking at your life situation based on your feelings, read the Word of God and see what God says about your situation. Then speak the Word of God over your situation. Don't speak what you feel because often your feelings can be negative. When you praise God and have confidence in His Word, then you won't be fearful over any man. You won't be fearful about anything.

Actually it says in 1 John 4:18a, "There is no fear in love [dread does not exist], but full-grown (complete, perfect) love turns fear out of doors and expels every trace of terror!" So when you are perfect in love, there is no fear in your heart. Instead your heart will be filled with faith. In Galatians 5:6 we read, "For [if we are] in Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith activated and energized and expressed and working through love."

So the way faith is expressed is through love. There is no fear in love, only faith. If there is fear in your heart, then it means you're not perfect in love. Your fear will show the lack of love that is in your heart. That lack of love in your heart will show the lack of faith in your life. That lack of faith in your life will show the lack of the Word of God you hear. In Romans 10:17 we read, "So faith comes by hearing [what is told], and what is heard comes by the preaching [of the message that came from the lips] of Christ (the Messiah Himself)." So faith comes by the Word of God.

So whether your walk by faith or by fear goes all the way back to the Word of God and how much of it you have in your hearts. To keep yourself from being fearful, start by pouring the Word of God into your heart. This requires you to do it every day. You have to make a conscious decision for yourself that you're going to read the Word of God for your soul so that God will speak to you.

As the Word comes into your heart, that Word inspires you to praise the Lord. As you praise the Lord, you are conveying the trust and reliance that you have in God. Because you trust God and believe that everything He says is true, then there will be no need for you to fear man. Instead you walk by faith. That faith is then expressed in love through words and deeds.

So the Word of God is the root of everything. How you approach your life situations, whether it be by fear or by faith, will all depend on how much of the Word you have in your heart. So today, let's make sure we take time to plant God's Word into our hearts so we can live a life of faith and love.
