Psalm 34:12-14
"What man is he who desires life and longs for many days, that he may see good? Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit. Depart from evil and do good; seek, inquire for, and crave peace and pursue (go after) it!"

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiVerse 12 speaks about a man who desires life and longs for many days, in which he wants to see good. According to the Scriptures, it's good to live a long life. God created each and every one of us with a desire in our hearts to live good and healthy lives. So it's not important just how long we live, but how well we live. This Scripture teaches us what we need to do if we want to live long and well. It says in verse 13a, "Keep your tongue from evil…" So don't allow your tongue to say anything evil. That's so important!

It says in James 3:5, "Even so the tongue is a little member, and it can boast of great things. See how much wood or how great a forest a tiny spark can set ablaze!" In other words, your tongue is just a little instrument but it has so much power. It's like a little match that can spark and ignite a huge blaze.

In Proverbs 18:21 we read, "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it [for death or life]." So the power of life and death are found in the power of your tongue. That's why we need to guard what our tongue speaks.

So this verse in Psalm 34 says that if we want to live long and well then we have to keep our tongue from evil. When we gossip against others, we are speaking evil. To gossip means to talk negatively about someone. Even when we criticize someone, we are still using our tongue for evil. In Proverbs 12:18 we read, "There are those who speak rashly, like the piercing of a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing." So we should use our tongue to bring healing to others, not to cut people down.

If we don't have anything positive to say, then we shouldn't say anything at all. Actually, Proverbs 21:23 says, "He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from troubles." So a wise person will watch the words that come out of his mouth and will keep himself out of trouble.

So along with keeping your tongue from evil, Psalm 34:13 also says that you should keep "your lips from speaking deceit." To deceive somebody means to purposely lie or direct someone in the wrong path. Again, you have to be careful of what your lips speak. If you speak deceit and lead someone in a wrong way, then you can't expect to live a long and good life.

Then it says in verse 14, "Depart from evil and do good; seek, inquire for, and crave peace and pursue (go after) it!" So not only should we stop speaking evil, we also have to stop doing evil. From the Word of God, we know that evilness is something that God hates. So whatever God is against is evil and we shouldn't do those things. God tells us in this verse to not engage in anything evil.

But it's not good enough to just depart from speaking evil and doing evil, God also wants us to do something else. He wants us to do what is good. He wants us to seek, inquire for and crave peace. Peace is perfect harmony with God and perfect harmony with people. Peace is a proactive thing. It doesn't just happen by itself. It requires us to take some action and live in peace with those around us.

So if we want to live long and well, our tongue and our actions have tremendous power over that. The majority of people who live short lives often do because of the words they speak and the things they do. They usually say and do things that are contrary to the Word of God, and that is why they live short lives.

On the other hand, those who live long and fulfilled lives do so because they speak and do what the Word of God says is right. So your speech and your actions determine the outcome of your life. So today let's choose to speak the Word of God and do the Word of God. Through that, God will ensure that you experience a long and good life.
