Isaiah 41:4
"Who has prepared and done this, calling forth and guiding the destinies of the generations [of the nations] from the beginning? I, the Lord – the first [existing before history began] and with the last [an ever-present, unchanging God] – I am He."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiAt this time, Israel had been forced into exile, meaning they had been banished from their land and were forced into another land. They were taken captive, and everything in their land was destroyed. In this chapter, God promises the Israelites that He was going to bring them out of captivity. After seventy years of punishment in exile, God sent someone to free them. God wanted the Israelites to notice how God was going to free them. This verse shows that God has prepared the destinies of all generations from the very beginning. Our God is the God of history. He stands behind all historical changes. It says in verse 4, "I, the Lord – the first [existing before history began]…" God was here from the beginning. He has led human history from generation to generation.

Does that mean that everything people decide to do is God's will? Of course not! God has given each and every one of us free will. But we decide whether or not we are going to follow God's will. God is still in control, and He uses people to fulfill His purpose. Some people think they are leading their own lives, but God is really the One leading them and using them for His purpose.

Let's say, for example, I have an aquarium and that aquarium is full of fish. If the fish are swimming westward, but I pick up that aquarium full of fish and carry them eastward, where are the fish actually headed? They are headed wherever I take them. So regardless of what direction they may be swimming in, I still control where they will end up. Even though they are swimming towards the west, they are being moved by a higher power. That's exactly how God guides history.

All kinds of things happen in our lives that we may not have planned for, but God is behind everything that happens. For example, I never intended to come to Canada. I wanted to study in the States, but God opened the door for me in Canada. When I was getting ready to move to Canada, I intended to find a wife there, but I met my wife in Vienna, Austria instead. I intended to have four children. My wife only wanted to have two. Then when we got married, she decided that she didn't want to have any. But we ended up having six children. My second daughter Elisabeth said, you wanted four, she wanted two, so now you have six. That is quite a good way of looking at it. There are lots of things that happen in life that weren't in our plans, but it's God's plans that will be fulfilled in the end anyhow. God is the maker of our history.

That doesn't mean that we don't have to plan. The Bible says in Proverbs 16:9 that we are the ones who plan our ways, but God directs our steps. So behind everything that happens in our lives and in this world, God wants us to see His activity. God has a purpose in everything. There is a purpose for every nation on the face of the earth. There is a purpose for every king and leader on this earth. There is a purpose for every individual. So if you and I line up with that purpose, then we are going to succeed in whatever we do.

If you try and fight the purpose of God, you will not succeed. God is the Creator of all things and He is in ultimate control of every situation that happens in our lives. Let's go back to the example of the aquarium. If the fish in that aquarium try to fight me and swim westward even though I am carrying them eastward, they would eventually hit the wall of the tank. If you tried to go against God's purposes, you too would find yourself in troublesome situations. So line yourself up with the will of God. When you become a part of God's purposes, then you will be successful in everything you do.
