Nehemiah 4:6, 1 Chronicles 5:2
"So we built the wall; and all [of it] was joined together to half its height, for the people had a heart and mind to work." "Judah prevailed above his brethren, and from him came the prince and leader [and eventually the Messiah]; yet the birthright was Joseph's."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiWhen the Israelites were building the wall of Jerusalem, there was tremendous opposition against them. The surrounding nations didn't want them to build this wall. They attacked them with words and swords. But the people of Israel determined that they were going to work on the wall no matter what. So with one hand, they worked; with the other hand, they fought. Such as that, the wall was finished in 52 days. But notice how they accomplished this task. It says that they had a heart and mind to work. That's why they succeeded. They put their hearts and minds into their work and decided to accomplish the task no matter what.

Then we read in 1 Chronicles 5:2 that "Judah prevailed above his brethren…" Was Judah born first? No. Then how come he prevailed? How did he become more powerful than the other brothers? How can it be that from him came the princes and even the Messiah if he wasn't the firstborn? Well even though he wasn't the firstborn, he gained the inheritance. He became more powerful because he worked harder and was wiser. He had all of his heart and mind in his efforts.

Let's say for example that you work in a company. If you only do what you're asked to do, you'll never go forward. When you only do what you're asked to do and cutbacks come (meaning they have to lay people off), you will be one of the first to go. But if you do more than what you're asked, your job will be secure. When you put your heart and mind into your work, you will find ways to bless your workplace. You will find ways to provide solutions to problems. God will give you the wisdom to do so. Not only will your job be secure, but also your employer will take notice of you. You would get a promotion with a higher pay or more benefits. That's if you put your heart and mind into your work.

So the only way you can really succeed in anything is when you have a heart and mind to work. When you have that, God will help you to succeed in anything and everything that you do. He will help you to prevail.
