2 Kings 18:5-7
"Hezekiah trusted in, leaned on, and was confident in the Lord, the God of Israel; so that neither after him, nor before him was any one of all the kings of Judah like him. For he clung and held fast to the Lord and ceased not to follow Him, but kept His commandments, as the Lord commanded Moses. And the Lord was with Hezekiah; he prospered wherever he went. And he rebelled against the king of Assyria and refused to serve him."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis is such a beautiful example of the benefits that come from obeying God. This passage describes great things about King Hezekiah. It says that in the kingdom of Judah, there was no other king like Hezekiah, neither after him nor before him. But let's examine what Hezekiah did that made him so different.

First of all, it says that he trusted in the Lord. He knew that God would be faithful to do what He said He would do. So Hezekiah trusted Him. For every decision, he trusted what God said. Secondly, he also leaned on God. He counted on Him and His Word. If God told him to do something, he would do it and trust that God would be with him. He relied upon God. Thirdly, he was confident in the Lord. There was no question of ‘will God be with me or will He not?' Hezekiah was sure that God would be with him no matter what. But why was he so confident? Why did he have such faith to lean on God?

Well, the Bible says that Hezekiah "clung and held fast to the Lord and ceased not to follow Him" [verse 6a]. So he consciously decided to do only what God said, to hold on to His Word, and to follow Him. That's just what Hezekiah did. He followed God. He kept His commandments. So, it was a conscious decision on Hezekiah's part to follow God.

That's why we need the Word of God. We need it to know what God says. Then our hearts have to be willing to obey it. Most Christians want the same things: more of God's presence in their lives and prosperity in everything they do. But these are the steps to attain those things. Do you want God to be with you? Do you want God to prosper you in whatever you do? Do you want God to make you the head and not the tail? Then you have to complete those steps first. Trust in God, lean on Him, be confident in Him, and obey His commandments.

Hezekiah consciously obeyed God and because he did, God prospered him. His prosperity was the direct result of obedience to the clear commandments of God. Wherever Hezekiah went and whatever Hezekiah did, God prospered him. So, it is important to seek God. That's why it is so important to put the Word of God in our hearts and obey it. We have to trust in God, lean on Him, and be confident in Him. Not only that, but we have to cling to God, hold fast to His Word, and cease not to follow Him. Obey and follow God, and He will prosper you in every area of your life.
