Deuteronomy 5:16
"Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, that your days may be prolonged and that it may go well with you in the land which the Lord your God gives you."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis is part of the second speech of Moses in the book of Deuteronomy, and it is part of the dacaloge, which means the Book of the Law – the Ten Commandments. The laws in most countries are based upon these Ten Commandments. We know what is right and wrong based on the law of God. The law of man will always change but the law of God never changes. So this commandment is the fifth commandment, and the first commandment with a promise. The promise that God makes when we obey this instruction is that our days will be prolonged and our lives will be well.

This commandment that God gives us is not a suggestion; it is a commandment, meaning we have to do. God tells us to honor our father and our mother. But what does it mean to honor them? To honor your parents means to show them respect, to listen, and to pay attention to them. When your parents tell you to do something and it is not contrary to the Word of God, then you have to do it.

If your parents teach you to study and work hard in school, then you have to do it. If they teach you to work well at your job, then you have to do it. If your parents teach you about relationships, then you have to listen to them. As long as what they teach is in accordance to the Word of God, you have to honor them.

For example, when you have to make a decision about what spouse to marry, honoring your parents would mean listening to what they say about who your spouse should be. Your parents shouldn't choose your spouse for you. You have to choose your own spouse. But you also have to listen to what they think about that person. If they don't feel that person is right for you, then honoring your parents would mean not to marry that person.

After Jesus, there is no one else who can have a better desire for you than your parents. Of course, there are some circumstances that are different. Not all parents are like that, but most parents will want what's best for their children. So we should all honor our parents regardless of how old we are and where we are in our lives. Now that doesn't mean that you have to be a slave to your parents, but it does mean that you have to pay attention to their counsel.

It says in this verse that when you honor your father and mother, "your days may be prolonged and that it may go well with you in the land which the Lord your God gives you." In other words, you'll live a longer and more successful life. But if you don't honor your parents, your life will be shortened and things will not be well with you.

For example, most parents will say to their children, "Do your homework." But when children don't listen, they often fail or drop out of school. As a result, they can't find a job, or they find a job but not a very good one. Most parents will say to their children, "Stay away from bad crowds." But when children don't listen and follow the bad crowd anyways, they begin to drink, do drugs, and commit sexual immorality.

As a result, their lives are destroyed. One night of sexual promiscuity could ruin your life. One drug overdose can end your life. All these sinful things may not seem like a big deal at the moment, but eventually they will lead to destruction. When children don't listen to their parents, their disobedience will eventually catch up with them. And their life gets shortened because of it.

Once you become an adult, you make your own decisions. Your parents will no longer and will have no reason to command you anymore. You make your own choices, but you still have to honor your parents and that means to get advice and guidance from them. When you honor them, then your life will be prolonged and God will ensure that everything is well with you. This is the first commandment with a promise, and God will make sure that His promise is kept when we obey this commandment.
