WORKS REWARDED

Date: May 5

Category: Hard Work and Diligence

2 Chronicles 15:2, 7
"And he went out to meet Asa and said to him, Hear me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin: the Lord is with you while you are with Him. If you seek Him [inquiring for and of Him, craving Him as your soul's first necessity], He will be found by you; but if you [become indifferent and] forsake Him, He will forsake you." "Be strong, therefore, and let not your hands be weak and slack, for your work shall be rewarded."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiIn the first passage, we read about a prophet who came to King Asa and told him that the Lord was going to be with him if he stayed with the Lord. When people don't feel the presence of God, they often feel very lonely. But it's because they, themselves, are not doing what is necessary to be close to God. God is as close to you as you want Him to be. It's your responsibility to grow closer to Him. So there are some things that you and I need to initiate if we want to be close to God. We have to willingly pray, read His Word, and obey Him. When we have fulfilled those conditions, God will fulfill His promises and will draw closer to you.

In the same verse, this prophet also says, "but if you [become indifferent and] forsake Him, He will forsake you." God never forsakes us initially. It's up to us to stay with God. If we don't forsake Him, He will in no way forsake us. He will always be with us. So knowing that, the prophet then says, "Be strong, therefore, and let not your hands be weak and slack, for your work shall be rewarded" [2 Chronicles 15:7].

It's so important that when we do something, we don't let our hands become weak and slack. Being weak means we become unable to complete the task. Being slack means we put the task off. Don't let that be the case in your life. If you have work to do or a task to complete, make sure you do your work first rather than putting the work off.

It says in this verse that when you are strong, you don't let your hands grow weak or slack, and your work shall be rewarded. What does it mean to be rewarded for your works? How does your work get rewarded?

Let's say, for example, that you are at work and you decide to do just what is required of you, and you never do anything extra. When it's time to lay off employees, you will be the one at risk of being laid off. But if you consciously decide to put forth more effort than what's required and do more than what your employer expects, then you can be sure that your job will be secure.

But not only are we supposed to do exceptionally good work wherever we are and with whatever we do, but we are to have creative ideas to help our employers and our companies improve. That reminds me of a story about Ford, who was the founder of Ford vehicles. He paid about $1,000 to anybody who came up with a creative idea to build a car with one less screw or nut. The more parts he could spare to build these vehicles, the more money he would save. So, he decided to pay $1,000 to anyone who could help him improve his cars. That's an example of how your works can be rewarded.

So when our hands don't become weak or slack and when we put forth a greater effort than what is required, God says that our work will be rewarded. If you want a reward, don't look at your boss; look at yourself. Look at your work habits because your promotion and your reward depend on you and your works.
