Jeremiah 10:23-24
"O Lord [pleads Jeremiah in the name of the people], I know that [the determination of] the way of a man is not in himself; it is not in man [even in a strong man or in a man at his best] to direct his [own] steps. O Lord, correct, instruct, and chastise me, but with judgment and in just measure – not in Your anger, lest You diminish me and bring me to nothing."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThe German translation (Hoffnung fuer Alle, which means, ‘hope for all') says in verse 23 that the life of a man is not in his own hands, and nobody can direct his life in accordance to his plan. If you read verse 21b, you can see that the leaders of Israel did not follow God. They "have not sought the Lord or inquired of Him or required Him [by necessity and by right of His word]. Therefore, they have not dealt prudently and have not prospered, and all their flocks are scattered." So when you seek God and make Him your first priority, then He will give you wisdom in life. God will teach you how to act prudently, and that action will bring you to prosperity. But in this case, the Israelites didn't seek after God, and as a result, they did not prosper. So now after reading that, we can better understand verse 23.

The way or the life of a man is not all determined by his own choice. The life of a man is not in his hands. In other words, if you are going to plan a life without God, if your only desire is to satisfy yourself, then you will not be able to direct your life well.

Some things happen in life because God directs them to happen. Even with the best planning we do, or the best decisions we make, some things still happen that we did not plan for. It's not up to you to direct your own steps. If you make decisions without considering God, then you are making a big mistake. Selfishness is the root of all unhappiness. So if you want to direct your life well, then your plans must line up with God's plans. When you do so, your plans will succeed because God's plans always succeed.

I remember wanting to marry an Austrian girl. Then I wanted to marry a girl from Switzerland, then a girl from Germany, but none of those relationships worked out. After that, I determined that I didn't want any more European girls. I wanted to find a wife in Canada. But God redirected my path, and I met Ljiljana who at the time lived in Vienna, Austria. I'm glad things didn't work out the way I planned. I'm glad God redirected my path.

I remember I wanted to move to the States but God directed me to Canada. I'm so glad He did because this is where He wanted to establish my ministry first in 1991 and then in the States in 2001. So even though we have to make plans, we also have to be aware that it is God who determines our steps. Ultimately, it is God's purposes that are going to be fulfilled. That's why we have to line our plans up with God's plan in order to see those purposes accomplished.

That's why it is so important to read the Scriptures. Through His Word, God will show you His plan and His will for your life. God will reveal to you what He wants you to do in this life. When you choose to read the Bible, meditate upon it, and do what it says, then you are going to prosper. You are going to succeed. Your plans will be fulfilled because your plans will line up with God's plan. The key thing is to remember that the establishment of your ways doesn't come from you. It comes from God. So you have to consider what God wants you to do.

When I was a teenager, I decided that I wanted to be a missionary evangelist. I didn't know exactly how or when everything was going to work out, but I felt a calling in my heart to become a missionary. So I pursued it. I studied the Bible; I worked hard. I went and preached; I learned how to minister to people. Now God has made me a missionary evangelist. So regardless of what you want to be in the future, you have to start doing what you need to do in order to get there, and you have to start now. It's like the old saying: if you do your best, then God will do the rest.

So don't try to live your life without God because as it says in these verses, your ways are not in yourself. Your ways are in God. You cannot do anything in this life without God. The very breath you breathe is because of God and His power. So make Him first in your life. If you do, you will do well. God will prosper you. He will give you wisdom. When you freely decide to obey God and His Word, you will be blessed, the Kingdom of God will be blessed, and God will be pleased.
