1 Chronicles 29:9,11-13, 14b
"Then the people rejoiced because these had given willingly, for with a whole and blameless heart they had offered freely to the Lord. King David also rejoiced greatly." "Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and the earth is Yours; Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and Yours it is to be exalted as Head over all. Both riches and honor come from You, and You reign over all. In Your hands are power and might; in Your hands it is to make great and to give strength to all… For all things come from You, and out of Your own [hand] we have given You."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiAround the time this passage was written, King David was gathering and collecting money in order to build the temple. He was the one who gave first. Then he asked all of his officers and commanders to give as well. It says in verse 9 that they gave willingly, meaning they were glad to give. There are several things to learn from this example of great giving. After they gave, they started praising and thanking God. Through those offerings that they gave, they realized that the Lord is to be praised and thanked forever. Then in verse 11, it says that the greatness, the power, the glory, and the victory and majesty are all His. Everything that is in heaven and on earth is God's. He is exalted over all.

It also says in verse 12, "Both riches and honor come from You." So they come from God. If you want to have both riches and honor, you need the Lord. Many people want riches and honor, but they don't want God. In order to gain both, we need God. Sometimes people only get riches, but they don't get any honor because they don't have God. Sometimes they only get honor but don't get any riches because they don't have God. But if you are with God, you can have both riches and honor.

The second part of verse 12 says, "In Your hands are power and might; in Your hands it is to make great and to give strength to all." So God is able to change any life situation around. He can make you great, and He can give you strength. He has the might and the power in His hands.

Then it says in the last part of verse 14, "For all things come from You, and out of Your own [hand] we have given You." Now that these people have given into the temple, they realized that what they were giving wasn't even theirs in the first place. The money they gave, the tithes and offerings, came out of God's hands. So we ought to understand that today. God gave you a hundred percent first. It is your responsibility to give back to Him the ten percent that belongs to Him because really, none of it is yours anyway. When we give to God, we are really giving it out of His own hands.

Because the people of Israel gave to the Lord, they realized that the very things people want, which are riches and honor, really come from the Lord. So if God blesses you materially, realize that it is from God. It comes through your own efforts of course, but it's really a gift from God. He is the enabler, who enables you to work towards receiving your blessing. That's why regardless of whether you have little or a lot, God wants you to give willingly to the Lord for His work. He wants you to give of your money and everything that He gives you. Once you realize with a thankful heart that everything belongs to Him anyway, you will begin to adore the Lord and praise Him for His goodness.

That will then lead you to the realization that all power, all glory, all greatness, all victory and all majesty belong to the Lord. You are not to take the honor for yourself. All the riches and honor that you could ever receive will come from God. So, if you have the right relationship with God, then you will benefit the right rewards of God.

So giving to the Lord keeps you humble. When you honor God with your first fruits, you are realizing that everything you have comes from Him anyway. It's so wonderful to know that from whatever He has given us we can give some portion of that back to Him. That way, we will not allow money to take control of our hearts, but we will make God the first priority of our lives. When we do that, God will continue to bless us and make us a blessing.
