Category: Trust in God

Isaiah 2:22
"Cease to trust in [weak, frail, and dying] man, whose breath is in his nostrils [for so short a time]; in what sense can he be counted as having intrinsic worth?"

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis is a word of the Lord that the prophet, Isaiah spoke to the nation of Israel. In this chapter, particularly in verse 12, God says that there would come a day that He would punish the proud. The people became prideful when they began trusting their own resources instead of God. So in verse 22, God is telling the people to stop trusting in man.

Your trust should only be in God because sooner or later, man will disappoint you. Sooner or later, you will see that you cannot trust man like you can trust God. Man is not worthy of that kind of trust. People sometimes fail. They sometimes lie. They don't always keep their promises. But God is faithful all the time. That's why we really need to rely upon Him. It says here that man only has breath in his nostrils for so short a time. In other words, man can die at any given time.

This even applies in regards to your parents. You cannot have full reliance on your parents alone. You need God. Your parents can't be there for you in every situation of your life. Your parents aren't always going to know what to say or what to do. One day, your parents are going to die. Of course, you should trust them as your parents, but not with the same kind of trust you should have in God. Full confidence and trust belongs to God, the Creator and Savior. He is the One who should have supreme command in your life.

Trusting and relying upon Him really means to believe what He says and obey His instruction. It means to line up your life with the Word of God. We are not to line up our lives to what other people say. Sometimes people will give you wrong direction. People can often lead you astray. But God will never do that. So we are to completely trust in Him and obey His commandments.

At one point or another, we've all been disappointed. Even married couples have been disappointed. They trusted in one another and then suddenly somebody breaks that trust by committing adultery. Yet marriage relationships are supposed to be one of the strongest relationships after your relationship with Jesus. So you can see how much weaker every other relationship must be.

Family relationships should be much stronger than friendship relationships. Your friends will often disappoint you. You may find people who only want your friendship based on what they can receive from you. You don't need such friends. So that's what this verse is teaching us. People don't have the same power that God has. People only have breath in their nostrils. They can die at any given time. We should not put our trust in man, but we should put our trust in God. He is the One with real supernatural power. He is the One who will live forevermore, and He is the One who is faithful all the time.
