Deuteronomy 28:1-2
"If you will listen diligently to the voice of the Lord your God, being watchful to do all His commandments which I command you this day, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you if you heed the voice of the Lord your God."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiBefore we look at the blessings of God in Deuteronomy, let's look at this passage, which is found right before the blessings of God are listed. It says here that we should listen diligently to the voice of the Lord. It's possible to read the Word of God but not really listen to God. So what does it mean to listen diligently?

It means we should pray and ask God to speak to us and ask Him to open our minds, our hearts, and our ears to hear His voice. Listening diligently means listening thoroughly. It means paying close attention to what is being said. That's the first thing we have to do. We have to listen carefully to the voice of God.

But it's not enough to just listen. Verse 1 also says, "..being watchful to do all His commandments…" So along with listening to God we also have to do what God says. If you're married, your spouse wants you to listen to what they're saying. But they also want you to do what they say. When parents talk to their children, they want their children to listen but also to do as they are told. God is the same way. We can't just listen to Him and not do anything about it. He wants us to watchfully do all His commandments. Notice that it says "all His commandments," meaning we don't get to pick and choose which ones to obey. God wants us to obey all of them.

Then verse 2b says, "..heed the voice of the Lord your God." That means remembering God's Word when situations arise. When you encounter a situation in life and thoughts come to you that are contrary to the Word of God, you should have the Word so treasured in your heart that you don't accept those thoughts. That's what it means to heed God's Word. When you do all those things is when all of the following blessings will overtake you.

We read in verses 3-5 about increase in our city, our field, our bodies, and our stocks. In verse 6, we read that we shall be blessed wherever we come and go. Then in verse 7, the Bible says that God will protect us from our enemies. In verse 8, we read that God will command blessing upon our storehouses. What are our "storehouses" in today's society? Our storehouses are our bank accounts and our investments. God will bless us with money. Verse 8 also says that God will bless us in everything we undertake. So whatever we decide to do God will bless.

In verse 11 the Bible says, "And the Lord shall make you have a surplus of prosperity…" In other words, God will give you more than what you need. In verse 12 we read that God will "open to you His good treasury, the heavens, to give the rain of your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hands; and you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow." In other words, God will bless your work so much that you will not have to borrow, but you will be able to lend to others.

Verse 13 says, "And the Lord shall make you the head, and not the tail; and you shall be above only, and you shall not be beneath, if you heed the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you this day and are watchful to do them."

So again, it says that if we listen to the commandments of the Lord and watchfully do them then we will receive the blessings of God. So really, the amount of blessing we receive depends on the amount of obedience we're willing to give. If we choose to listen to God's voice and obey His commandments, then we will see His hand of blessing on our lives. But the choice is ours to make. So choose blessing today!
