2 Chronicles 31:10b
"Since the people began to bring the offerings into the Lord's house, we have eaten and have plenty left, for the Lord has blessed His people, and what is left is this great store."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiKing Hezekiah, who was a very godly king, decided to collect money and resources so the temple and service of God would be restored. But the first purpose of the money collected was to pay the priests, the Levites. It's so important to understand that. If a minister is to engage himself in fulltime ministry for God, he needs money to live on. If you and I need money to pay rent, then the minister needs money to pay rent as well. If you and I need money for food and clothing, the minister needs money for food and clothing as well. Whatever we need, the minister needs too.

That's why the first portion of our tithes and offerings should go to the priest, the people who are ministering the Word of God. Actually it says in Galatians 6:6, "Let him who receive instruction from the Word [of God] share all good things with his teacher [contributing to his support]." In other words, when the minister of the Word ministers to us, then we who are benefiting from that teaching should be supporting that teacher with our financial resources. When we do, we are enabling that person to fully commit himself to the work of the Lord.

If ministers don't receive support from us, then they'll have to go and support themselves some other way, usually by working secular jobs. There's nothing wrong with that, but if they work in secular jobs, then they're not able to fully commit themselves to the service of God. They'll have less to give you spiritually.

This happened during the time of Nehemiah. When Nehemiah reinstated temple worship and giving tithes, he went back to Persia. When he left, the people stopped tithing. As a result, the priests weren't being supported so they had to go back to their farms and fields to support themselves. When they closed the temple, the people stopped worshipping God. They began breaking God's law again. They began doing all the things they did before that caused them to go into exile. So Nehemiah came back and rebuked them for not tithing and allowing the priests to stay in fulltime ministry.

Not only should there be enough for the priests, but the Bible says that there should be plenty left. There should be more than enough. When the minister has more than enough, then you can be sure that God will bless you more than enough. So the minister of the gospel needs to be supported and we should be the ones supporting them.

The rest of verse 10b says, "For the Lord has blessed His people, and what is left is this great store." When God blesses us there should be a great store for the Kingdom of God, meaning there should be plenty left over for God's work. He blesses us so we can be generous. When we are generous, God blesses us even more. The first fruits of our increase, our tithes and offerings, belong to God anyway. We are not to touch that. We are to give that to the Lord and the priests have the right to live off that and do the work of God.

When the nation of Israel started giving their tithes and offerings, the entire nation was blessed. Because the ministers were supported, they were able to work for the Lord fulltime and preach the Word of God and pray for people. As the Word got preached and people were prayed for, the entire nation became a blessed nation.

A minister's central purpose is to preach the gospel and pray on behalf of the people. It says in Acts 6:2, "So the Twelve [apostles] convened the multitude of the disciples and said, It is not seemly or desirable or right that we should have to give up or neglect [preaching] the Word of God in order to attend to serving at tables and superintending the distribution of food." Then in verse 4 we read, "But we will continue to devote ourselves steadfastly to prayer and the ministry of the Word."

That is their primary job – to commit themselves steadfastly to prayer and the ministry of the Word of God. I can tell you that it's not easy work. That's why ministers need time to spend with God to strengthen their spirits, and in order to have that time they need to be paid for their work in ministry. When the minister of the gospel has more than enough, the people will have more than enough as well. So let's remember that the blessing of God understands generosity.
