2Chronicles 19:11c
"Deal courageously [be strong and do], and may the Lord be with the good!"

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiIn the German translation called Hoffnung fuer Alle, (which means, ‘hope for all'), this verse says, "When you are dealing rightly, the Lord will be with you." This is the instruction that the godly king Jehoshaphat gave to the Levites. In verse 8 we read, "Also in Jerusalem, Jehoshaphat set certain Levites, priests, and heads of families of Israel to give judgment for the Lord and decide controversies." So he appointed these people to give judgment. Then in verse 9 we read, "The king charged them, Do this in the fear of the Lord, faithfully, with integrity and a blameless heart." In other words, they were to do this in reverence to God. Their job was to make judgment in regards to situations brought before them by using the principles found in the Word of God.

While making judgment for the people, they were also given the opportunity to teach them the Word of God as well. When they taught people the right ways according to the Word of God, then the people who had controversies would no longer have any guilt before the Lord, it says in verse 10. Then we read in verse 11 that the king placed one priest, Amariah, to be over all of them in all matters of the Lord. He also placed Zebadiah as the governor of the house of Judah, in all the king's matters. Then he said that the Levites would serve them as officers.

So the king has commissioned these people to teach the Word of God and to settle controversies according to what's written in the Word. Then he says in verse 11c, "Deal courageously [be strong and do], and may the Lord be with the good!"

It's interesting to notice that whether or not God's presence is in our lives, depends on our obedience to His call or on whether that which we do is good. Even when He gave us that great commission in Matthew 28:19, "Go then and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit," He promised that he would be with us as we go and do what God wants us to do. He will be with us as we obey Him.

But we need to be diligent and decisive in our work. We should not be reluctant or delayed. That's how God wants us to approach any work. He wants us to be decisive. When there is something before us that needs to be done, God wants us to do it. As we get on with our work in the right way, God will be with us.

Nowadays, there are so many things that we have to do. With our busy lives, we should make a list of things in our lives that need to get done. Then we should work towards accomplishing those things. We should do the most important things first and then do the rest after if we still have time. If for example we have ten things that we need to do today, we should make sure that we do the two most important things first. The two most important items from that list comprise about 80% of our success in life. In this story, as the Levites were appointed to be judges, God said that He would be with them. As we walk in obedience doing what God tells us to do, God's presence will be manifested in our lives.

Some people want God to be with them but they don't want to do anything for the Lord. Some people want to live in disobedience to God but they want Him to be there. It doesn't work like that. First of all, we have to deal courageously, be strong, and do what God tells us to do. But we also have to live and act in reverence to the Lord, with faith, integrity and a blameless heart. Then the Lord will be with the good. But the Lord cannot be with those who aren't good. If you are walking in sin, then you can't expect God's presence to be in your life. Stop that right now. But if you are walking righteously before the Lord, doing the work that He calls you to do, then God promises that He will be with you.

"Deal courageously [be strong and do], and may the Lord be with the good!" This is the commandment that King Jehoshaphat gave to the Levites, the leaders and judges of that time. So if you are a leader in any kind of way, and we all are in one way or another, then you should heed to this commandment as well. You are to be strong and act courageously. You are to go forth and do the work that is ahead of you faithfully, with integrity and fear of the Lord. When you do, God's presence will be in your life.
