1 Chronicles 28:20
"Also David told Solomon his son, Be strong and courageous, and do it. Fear not, be not dismayed, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail or forsake you until you have finished all the work for the service of the house of the Lord."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiIn this passage, King David is giving his son Solomon an instruction. He is not giving him an option or an idea, but a commandment. The commandment is: "Be strong and courageous, and do it." A German translation called Hoffnung für Alle, (which means, ‘hope for all'), says, "Do not be reluctant and get on with the work."

In other words, God wants us to be quick to work. This is a commandment that we should all obey anytime we have something ahead of us. We should not lose sight of this commandment especially when there is a work before that we need to do.

So when we have work ahead of us, we should get on with it. We shouldn't just sit around and wait for the work to do itself. Nothing happens by waiting. We should get on with the work and do it with all of our might. This verse even instructs us not to be afraid. We should never let fear seize us in such a way that we become disabled from doing our work. That's why the Bible says here to be strong and courageous.

So when you and I have a job to do, especially if it is a job for the Lord, we should not expect someone else to do it for us. Instead, we should get that job done ourselves. Don't let the work of God be undone because the second part of the verse says, "He will not fail or forsake you until you have finished all the work for the service of the house of the Lord." In other words, once you begin a work for God, He is going to be with you until you finish it. That's a promise from the Lord. You don't even have to ask for it. He said that He would be with you, so He will.

So when you begin your work, do not have fear and do not be dismayed. Don't be confused or discouraged. Don't let oppositions come and sway you away from your work. Don't let fearful thoughts enter your mind. Dwell on the thoughts of God. Tell yourself that you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you (Philippians 4:13).

"All things" means everything. There is nothing you can't do because God is with you. There's no need to be afraid, especially when you are doing something for the Lord. When you do work for God, you have the assurance and guarantee from the Word of God that God will be with you.

But not only are we supposed to begin the work that is before us, but we also have to keep on working until we complete it. That is also a part of this commandment as we can read in the last part of the verse. So when you start your studies, you have to finish them. When you start a business, you have to finish it. When you start a marriage, you have to stay with that marriage.

Whatever project you begin, you have to stay with it until you finish it. This is especially important if you began a work for the Lord because as I said earlier, we should never let the work of the Lord be undone.

One thing to remember is that some things will take longer to complete than others. If it took a long time to ruin something, it will take a long time to build it up again. For example, if it took a long time to become physically ill (by poor eating habits and lack of exercise), then it'll take just as long to become healthy again (by eating properly and exercising well). But no matter how long a project takes, God will be there with you until you complete it.

For that reason, we should be initiators and start the work that is ahead of us. We shouldn't just sit back and expect the work to get done itself. God wants us to rise up and do it, especially if it is the work of God that is before us. When we take that initiative, then God will be with us until we complete that work. That is a promise from the Lord, and we can count on it!
