2 Kings 18:12
"Because they did not obey the voice of the Lord their God, but transgressed His covenant, even all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded, and would not hear it or do it."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiAs we read through the history of Israel, we learn that there was a time when the northern kingdom was taken by Assyria. The Assyrians expelled all the citizens of Israel and took them into foreign countries. In verse 11a the Bible says, "The king of Assyria carried Israel away to Assyria…" So the northern nation was sent into exile. Verse 12 explains why this happened.

"Because they did not obey the voice of the Lord their God…" So the nation of Israel did not obey God's voice. Instead, they did as they pleased without acknowledging God. Because of their disobedience, God gave them into the hands of their enemies. God allowed their enemies to come and destroy them.

Let's read on the verse to learn more about what Israel did. The second part of the verse says that they transgressed His covenant. A covenant is a contract made between two parties. In this case, there was a covenant between God and the Israelites. But Israel broke that contract by disobeying God. Because Israel broke that covenant, the contract is no longer valid. God promised them blessing for obedience, but they chose to disobey instead, so they reaped the results of disobedience, which is punishment.

Then the last part of the verse says that they "would not hear it or do it." Not only did they not obey the voice of the Lord and not only did they transgress His covenant, they also refused to hear His Word. The Israelites were very stubborn people, and their stubbornness brought them to disaster. They lost their land, their homes, their families, and were cast out. Many of them even lost their lives – all because of disobedience.

I believe that this story has been recorded for us to learn from today. I believe verse 12 has been written as a warning for us. If we want to be blessed, we have to obey God. If we don't obey God, then we'll finish the same way the Israelites did. So disobedience leads to punishment. That's the key lesson to learn here.

When it actually happens to people, they often ask, "Why is this happening to me?" But it happened because they sowed a bad seed and that is a seed of disobedience. If you sow seeds of obedience to God, then you're going to reap blessing. But if you sow disobedience, then your harvest will be punishment. No questions asked.

You may be able to fool other people, but you will never be able to fool God. He sees directly into your heart. He knows every thought you have. He sees every action you do. He hears every word you speak. Even when you're alone and no one else is around, God is there and He sees all and knows all.

So verse 12 is a warning to all of us. Even though God loves us and wants to bless us, it's really our actions that will determine what we experience in life. We can see from this example that God and the Israelites had a covenant. God promised to bless them and He did. He performed miracles in their nation throughout history. When they cried out, He answered.

But they chose to rebel against God, and because of that unwise decision, the covenant that God made with Israel was broken. As a result, they were punished and their future was destroyed. There's a consequence for every action that we do. There is a harvest for every seed that we sow. So today, let's learn from this story. Let's sow seeds of obedience to God's Word and reap the blessing that He promises us!
