INCLINE YOUR HEART TO HIM

Date: April 7

Category: Follow God

1 Kings 8:56-58
"Blessed be the Lord, Who has given rest to His people Israel, according to all that He promised. Not one word has failed of all His good promise which He promised through Moses His servant. May the Lord our God be with us as He was with our fathers; may He not leave us or forsake us, that He may incline our hearts to Him, to walk in all His ways and to keep His commandments, His statutes, and His precepts which He commanded our fathers."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiIn this passage, Solomon is speaking to the Israelites as the temple is being completed. We can learn through this passage that God always keeps His promises but He requires us to obey Him first. Actually in verse 56, it says that none of God's promises have failed. So we know that God is faithful to keep all His promises, the Bible says.

Then in verse 57 it says, "May the Lord our God be with us…" That statement really means, "May God's presence be with us." So the Israelites wanted God to be present in their lives. But how will they discover God's presence in their lives? Well in verse 58 we read, "That He may incline our hearts to Him…" So when our hearts are inclined to God then He is present in our lives. When we want to do what God wants us to do, when we have a heart to hear God's voice, then that means He is present in our lives.

The rest of verse 58 teaches us what it means to incline our hearts to God. It says, "..to walk in all His ways and to keep His commandments, His statutes, and His precepts which He commanded our fathers." To walk in His ways means to live the way God wants you to live. That means living it in the morning, the afternoon, and the evening. God wants us to live according to His ways all the time.

So to incline our hearts to God means to live in all His ways. To live in all His ways means to keep His commandments. The word "keep" in Hebrew is "shamar," which means to observe. When a person keeps a garden, he observes it. He takes care of it and does what it takes to keep the garden growing. That's how we should keep God's commandments. We should do whatever it takes to obey them.

Let's look at the Ten Commandments. The first four commandments speak about our relationship with God. The other six are about our relationship with other people. We cannot keep the last six if we haven't kept the first four. In other words, there is no way we can have a proper relationship with other people if we don't have a proper relationship with God. So we have to nurture our relationship with God first, and secondly we have to love our neighbors. These are the commandments that He wants us to keep.

Along with the Ten Commandments, we should also obey everything else that we can read in the Scriptures. That's what it means to keep God's statutes and His precepts. We have to read the Word of God all the way through and obey every instruction that God gives us.

Sometimes you might wonder what the will of God is for your life. You might not have clear direction of where to go and what to do with your life. In such cases, search the Word of God. About 85% of the will of God for your life is clearly stated in the Bible. When we read the Word of God, we will know clearly what God wants us to do.

So when you and I incline our hearts to God, God's presence will be in our lives. If you are wondering whether or not God is present in your life, check your heart. Determine if your heart is inclined to God. Then determine if your actions line up with your heart, meaning you are obedient to His commandments. If your heart is inclined to God and you are walking in His ways by obeying His commandments, then His presence is in your life. When God's presence is in your life, then you can be sure He will fulfill all His promises.
