GOD IS OUR LAMP

Date: April 4

Category: Setting Goals

2 Samuel 22:29
"For You, O Lord, are my Lamp; the Lord lightens my darkness."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis has always been a verse that I was deeply amazed to read. It says here that the Lord lightens my darkness. At one point or another, we all encounter darkness in our lives. We all face decisions where we don't know what to do or what's going to happen in the future. The decision that faces us may be large or small, but we still don't know what to do. Sometimes a small decision can result in a big change. So every decision we make is important and everyday we make decisions.

A young person may not know what career to choose or what school to go to. A single person may not know what spouse to marry. A married couple may not know how many kids to have, what house to buy, what location to move to, etc. All of those decisions can seem like darkness to us.

But it says here in the Word of God that the Lord lightens our darkness. So if we want to know how to deal with those decisions, whether they are minor or major, then we need the Lord. The beginning of this verse says, "For You, O Lord, are my Lamp…" So the Lord is the One who provides light for you. It's very similar to Psalm 119:105 where it says, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." In other words, God is the One who will provide that light for us. His Word is what will lead us out of that darkness.

If we don't know what to do, if we don't know what road to follow, then we need to know the Word of God. That Word of God is our lamp. Through His Word, God will teach us what to do. God will direct us in His way and down the path He wants us to follow. If we ever encounter a time when we don't know what to do, it could be because we haven't read the Word of God enough. That's why it's so important to spend time reading and meditating on the Word of God. Think about how His Word applies to you and your life situation. Then pray.

Let's look at the example of Jesus Christ. When He was upon the earth, He had to make some major decisions as well. For example, He had to decide who His disciples were going to be. Before Jesus made that decision, He spent a whole night in prayer. He spent time in the presence of God, praying and meditating upon the Word of God. So if Jesus the Son of God had to do that, then we have to do that as well. Whenever we're faced with a decision, whether it is large or small, spend time in the presence of God, reading His Word, and praying. That's when our direction will come.

I mentioned earlier that some small decisions could result in some big changes. Let's say, for example, you decided to take one drink. That drink could devastate the rest of your life. You could become addicted to it, or you could get hurt in a car accident, or even lose your life.

Or let's say you decided to have sexual intercourse with a stranger once. You could get AIDS or some other sexually transmitted disease. You could become pregnant at an early age in your life, or you could cause yourself to become sterile. Your life could be changed completely after that one experience.

Or let's say you decided to speak a word of poison to your spouse. You could poison that person's soul by speaking death over him/her. A wife could tell her husband that he's worthless or a husband could tell his wife he didn't love her anymore. Those words are like poison to their souls, and that will hurt the other person and the relationship.

So little decisions can have a big impact on our lives. It's important to let the Word of God direct our thoughts, our decisions, and our paths. The beginning of Psalm 119:105 says, "Your word is a lamp to my feet…" That means that the places where you step foot, meaning the decisions you make, are determined by the Word of God. Then it says, "..and a light to my path." So not only will the Word of God determine what decisions you make, it will also determine what direction you take.

That's why spending time alone with God, reading His Word, meditating upon His truth, and praying is so important. Spending time in God's presence is the key ingredient of making wise choices in our lives. In order to get the darkness out of our lives, the Lord has to be our lamp, it says in 2 Samuel 22:29. In order for Him to be our lamp, we have to spend time with Him.

Numbers 6: 24-26 says, "The Lord bless you and watch, guard, and keep you; the Lord make His face to shine upon and enlighten you and be gracious (kind, merciful, and giving favor) to you; the Lord lift up His [approving] countenance upon you and give you peace (tranquility of heart and life continually)."

The Lord God is the One who shines upon us. He is the One who enlightens us and gives us proper understanding of our lives. His light will shine into our dark spots. You and I need God everyday to help and guide us and lead us to make the right decisions for our lives. So let's make sure He is our first priority today!
