ASSEMBLE THE PEOPLE

Date: March 27

Category: Follow God

Deuteronomy 31:12-13
"Assemble the people – men, women, and children, and the stranger and the sojourner within your towns – that they may hear and learn [reverently] to fear the Lord your God and be watchful to do all the words of this law, And that their children, who have not known it, may hear and learn [reverently] to fear the Lord your God as long as you live in the land which you go over the Jordan to possess."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis is a command to assemble all the people together. This included the stranger and the sojourner as well. Everybody in the town was to be gathered together. So that means that when we have a church meeting, we should all gather together to go to church. When we have family devotional time, we should all gather together at home as well. But what is the purpose of gathering together? Well it says in verse 12b, "That they may hear and learn [reverently] to fear the Lord your God and be watchful to do all the words of this law."

In other words, the assembly has to come together so that every person will hear and learn to fear the Lord – to have respect and love for God. Fearing the Lord means obeying God. It means doing what we need to do in order to please God. The purpose of these meetings is to become God-conscious people who know and recognize the heart of God. Fearing God isn't something that comes over night. It's something we must learn. That's why we have to spend time reading the Word, listening to the Word, and praying to God. That's why we have to gather together.

So the purpose of assembling together is to hear the Word of God. The purpose of hearing the Word of God is to fear the Lord. The rest of verse 12 teaches us what it means to fear God. "..be watchful to do all the words of this law." So the fear of the Lord, which means respecting God, is what causes us to do what God says in His Word. Notice that God wants us to do ALL the words of the law – not just what we want to do. God wants us to obey all His commandments. You can't partially serve God. God wants all our obedience.

Another purpose for gathering together in an assembly is found in verse 13. "And that their children, who have not known it, may hear and learn [reverently] to fear the Lord your God as long as you live in the land which you go over the Jordan to possess." So we gather together so that our children, who don't know the law of the Lord, will come to know it and fear God as well.

So according to this verse, how long should we obey God? Well, it says "as long as you live in the land," meaning as long as we are alive. We should obey God every day all day. That's what God expects of us, and that's what it means to fear God. There are many kings in the history of Israel who started their reign off well but then they strayed away from God. Because of that, God brought punishment and disaster upon them and their land. So don't be like them. Follow God all the days of your life.

We should all have a time when we gather together as a church to sing songs of praise, to pray for one another, and to hear the Word of God. We should all have family devotions, preferably every day, when we study the Word of God as a family with the purpose of learning to fear the Lord and watchfully doing what He commands us to do. But when we leave our church meeting, or our family devotion time, or any other godly assembly, God wants us to take Him with us. He wants us to obey Him everywhere we go. That's what God desires of us.
