LIFE IS SHORT

Date: March 10

Category: Follow God

Job 7:7-10
"Oh, remember that my life is but wind (a puff, a breath, a sob); my eye shall see good no more. The eye of him who sees me shall see me no more; while your eyes are upon me, I shall be gone. As the cloud is consumed and vanishes away, so he who goes down to Sheol (the place of the dead) shall come up no more. He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him any more."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiIn his time, Job experienced great suffering and loss. He was quite a wealthy and respected man, but suddenly he lost everything. He lost his house, his servants, his money, and even his own children. Job had 10 children and they all died. Not only that, but he also lost his health. All kinds of sores developed on his body and he became ill. His wife even said to him at one point, "Why don't you curse God and die?" But Job never raised his voice at God.

People looked at the suffering that Job was enduring and assumed that he must have done something terrible against God; he must have committed a great sin to be punished that much. But Job didn't do anything wrong. When you read the narrative frame of the book, and especially the chapters one and two, you can see that what happened to Job was because of what happened in heaven. Things happen in the natural realm based on the things that happen in the spiritual realm. Satan wanted to attack Job and God gave him permission to.

In verse 7, Job said, "Oh, remember that my life is but wind (a puff, a breath, a sob); my eye shall see good no more." In other words, he said that his life is short; it's brief, meaning it could end at any time. In verse 9 we read, "As the cloud is consumed and vanishes away, so he who goes down to Sheol (the place of the dead) shall come up no more." The way a cloud is consumed and vanishes away, is the way our lives will go. Then in verse 10 we read, "He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him any more."

Young people often think they'll never die. They think they can do anything and still live forever. But that's not true. This verse says that life is like a wind; it's like a breath. It lasts only for a moment and could end any time. But as young people get older, life begins to change very quickly. One thing that people discover as they get older is how quickly time passes. When we are younger, we always want to speed the clock. When we enter our 20-30's, we like the way time moves. But when we become 40, we want time to slow down. The older we get, the faster the time passes.

So there will come a time that we will all leave our earthly bodies. All of us are going to die one day or another. That's why it's so important that we live with awareness that our life could end any day. When we have that awareness, we are going to live differently. We're not going to use drugs, drink alcohol, drive crazily, or get into immoral things to end our lives quicker. Life is short as it is; we don't need to shorten it even more.

We actually should be working to prolong our lives by obeying God's commandments. When you and I obey God, He promises that we are going to live well and live long. So God doesn't want us to live a short life. He wants us to obey Him so that we can live a long life upon the earth and a prosperous one as well.

But many people die young because of their own choices. When people choose to live immorally, they shorten their lives that way. When people commit adultery, use drugs, drink alcohol, or commit other acts that are contrary to God's instruction, they shorten their days upon this earth more and more. God cannot protect them if they are living in sin. God cannot give them more years upon the earth if they are disobeying His commandments.

So we should have the same awareness that Job had. Life is like wind. Any one of us can leave our earthly bodies at any time. Some may go sooner than others, but we will all leave this earth eventually. Life is short; we don't need to shorten it even more. Instead, we should live our lives in accordance to God's Word so that our lives will be prolonged on the earth. I leave you with the great words of missionary statesman C.T. Studd: "This life will soon be passed. Only what's done for Christ will last."
