LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD

Date: March 4

Category: Follow God

Deuteronomy 6:4-9
"Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord [the only Lord]. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your [mind and] heart and with your entire being and with all your might. And these words which I am commanding you this day shall be [first] in your own minds and hearts; [then] you shall whet and sharpen them so as to make them penetrate, and teach and impress them diligently upon the [minds and] hearts of your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down and when you rise up. And you shall bind them as a sign upon your hand, and they shall be as frontlets (forehead bands) between your eyes. And you shall write them upon the doorposts of your house and on your gates."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiMoses spoke these words to the Israelites according to what God wanted them to hear. The first thing he says is "love the Lord your God…" Then Moses tells them how they are to show that love to God. He says, "..these words which I am commanding you this day shall be [first] in your own minds and hearts…" In other words, we are to know and memorize the Scriptures. Have them always in our thoughts. That's how we would love the Lord.

Another way of loving the Lord is stated in verse 7. "You shall whet and sharpen them so as to make them penetrate, and teach and impress them diligently upon the [minds and] hearts of your children…" Children enjoy watching movies over and over again. They enjoy listening to music over and over again. Because of that, we should be teaching them the Word of God over and over again until they know it by heart. That's how we show our love for God.

Some people say they love the Lord, but they don't take time to memorize the Word of God or they don't teach their children from His Word. That shows that they don't really love God. Our love for God is shown through our actions and obedience to His Word.

In verses 8-9, the Bible says, "And you shall bind them as a sign upon your hand, and they shall be as frontlets (forehead bands) between your eyes. And you shall write them upon the doorposts of your house and on your gates." We should constantly speak the Word of God; keep His Word in our thoughts, and have His Word all over your house. Those things should become a common practice in our lives as believers.

When you look in the New Testament in John 14:21, the Bible says, "The person who has My commands and keeps them is the one who [really] loves Me; and whoever [really] loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I [too] will love him and will show (reveal, manifest) Myself to him. [I will let Myself be clearly seen by him and make Myself real to him]."

Have you ever felt like God didn't love you? Have you ever felt like God has taken His love from you? If you ever felt that God doesn't love you, don't be so quick to make that your conclusion. Instead, ask yourself, "Do I love God?" If you really love God, then you will keep His commandments. When you do that, you are showing God that you truly love Him. If you truly love Him, then you will never feel like God's love has departed from you.

That's why it is so important to keep God's commandments. Not only that, but we are also to spend time memorizing the Scriptures, teaching the Scriptures to others, and write about them, bind them, and even hang them on our walls, the Bible says. That's how we express our love for God.

The greatest commandment of all is found in verse 5, "And you shall love the Lord your God with all your [mind and] heart and with your entire being and with all your might." You show that love by your actions in obedience to His Word. As you read on to the following chapter you will read about God's promise to bless and prosper us when we do His commandments (chapter 7, verse 13). There is great blessing that comes from loving God and obeying His Word. So today, choose to love the Lord your God, and express that love through your obedience!
