GENERATIONS OF GODLINESS

Date: February 28

Category: Follow God

Deuteronomy 4:9-10, 14
"Only take heed, and guard your life diligently, lest you forget the things which your eyes have seen and lest they depart from your [mind and] heart all the days of your life. Teach them to your children and your children's children – especially how on the day that you stood before the Lord your God in Horeb, the Lord said to me, Gather the people together to Me and I will make them hear My words, that they may learn [reverently] to fear Me all the days they live upon the earth and that they may teach their children." "And the Lord commanded me at that time to teach you the statutes and precepts, that you might do them in the land which you are going over to possess."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis is a sermon that Moses gave to the people of Israel before they were about to enter the promised land. In verse 9, he tells them to take heed and guard their lives diligently. It is so important to take heed and guard your life. Life is the most precious possession that God has given you. Without life, you would not exist here. We are people who promote the culture of life, not the culture of death as some cults do. Moses tells us here to take heed and guard our life diligently.

Not only that, but Moses says that we should remember our experiences with the Lord and share them with our children and our children's children. We should tell our children about the things that God has done in our lives. The greatest thing that God has ever done in our lives is forgive us of our sins and make us His own. The second greatest thing that God has done is bless us with a godly spouse, and the third greatest thing is that He gave us a good career or ministry. This verse says that we should teach our children about all the good things that God has done in and through us.

That means that I personally have to take time out of my day and teach my children about what God has done. I have to point out the key elements of divine intervention in my life. God saved my soul. He gave me a godly wife, and He led me to my ministry. It was because of God's grace and mercy that I'm blessed with all of those things and more.

But what is the purpose of teaching our children about what God has done in our lives? Well it says in verse 10b, "Gather the people together to Me and I will make them hear My words, that they may learn [reverently] to fear Me all the days they live upon the earth and that they may teach their children." So the purpose of teaching our children is so they will learn to reverently fear the Lord and so that they will teach their own children as well.

Also notice that verse 14 says, "And the Lord commanded me at that time to teach you the statutes and precepts, that you might do them in the land which you are going over to possess." So not only are we to teach our children of the great things that God has done in our lives, but we also have to teach them the statutes and precepts of God – the commandments of the Lord. The purpose of teaching your children the Word of God is so they will do them.

But before we can teach our children, we have to be taught ourselves. We have to allow God to speak to our hearts first. Read the Word of God for yourself and ask the Holy Spirit to speak into your heart the divine things that He wants you to learn. When He does that, then teach your children what God has spoken to you. God has to speak to you first before you can speak to your children.

Your success in life depends on whether or not you follow God's Word. For every question you have, the answer is found in the Word of God. From questions about how to find the right spouse or how to find the right career to questions about how to be financially successful or how to be blessed in your marriage, all the answers are found in God's Word. That's why it is so important to teach the Word of God to your children.

When you teach your children of your own experiences with God and from His Word, they will learn to reverently fear God and keep His commandments. Because of that, they will be successful in life. When they have children of their own, they will teach them the same things and the generation of success and godliness in your family will carry on.
