FRUIT IN THE DROUGHT

Date: February 18

Category: Strength in God

Jeremiah 17:7-8
"[Most] blessed is the man who believes in, trusts in, and relies on the Lord, and whose hope and confidence the Lord is. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters that spreads out its roots by the river; and it shall not see and fear when heat comes; but its leaf shall be green. It shall not be anxious and full of care in the year of drought, nor shall it cease yielding fruit."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis is a very powerful passage. It is about yielding fruit in the midst of a drought. Think of an actual drought. Everything usually dies in a drought. Nothing survives. Even animals have difficulties living. Nothing is green when there is a drought. Water is one of the most important healing elements that the ground can have. Not only that, but it is one of the most important things that we can have in our own bodies as well. Anything that grows needs water. But in these verses, God promises that even in the midst of a drought, you will still bear fruit.

When there is tremendous heat, the grass usually becomes brown. Yet God says here that your leaves will be green [verse 8b]. But how will that happen? How will your leaves stay green even through a drought? Well the answer to that is found in verse 7. "[Most] blessed is the man who believes in, trusts in, and relies on the Lord, and whose hope and confidence the Lord is." So when you fully trust and rely upon God, then you can be sure that your leaves will always be green even in a drought. In other words, when you have faith in God, you will not be afraid when heat comes – when trials or tribulations come. You won't even notice them. People, who have faith in God, do not operate on fear. They operate by faith.

When you believe and trust in God, God gives you wisdom on how to take action and prepare yourself before the drought comes. An example of preparation would be always putting forth your best effort at your workplace. Let's say you always learn new skills and master them, and you always do more than what's required. If cut backs have to be made and people have to be laid off, your job will be secure. But even if you do get laid off, you'll still have those skills and abilities that will persuade another employer to hire you quickly. That is an example of preparing yourself for the drought. God looks at the end from the beginning and that's how God wants you to be. He wants you to prepare for the end result from the very beginning.

You should do the same thing in marriage. Know the needs of your partner and work towards meeting those needs before problems arise. Make the effort to communicate effectively and understand your spouse. When other people around you start divorcing, you and your spouse will still be together because you have worked to maintain a healthy and strong marriage.

Apply this into the way you raise your children as well. Why teach your children the right way after they've already gotten themselves into trouble? You teach them to behave properly before they misbehave. So take time to teach your children from the Word of God. It's important to teach them the basic life principles found in God's Word.

So when the drought comes, when the heat comes, when the difficulties come, don't operate on fear and anxiety. Operate on faith. Have faith and trust in God. When you do that, you'll still bear fruit even in a drought. Your leaves will still be green despite the heat. In fact, you won't even notice the drought because your faith in God will remind you that God is greater than any situation you may encounter.
