Colossians 3:18-19
"Wives, be subject to your husbands [subordinate and adapt yourselves to them], as it is right and fitting and your proper duty in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives [be affectionate and sympathetic with them] and do not be harsh or bitter or resentful toward them."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiToday is Valentine's Day! There are many different legends about the origins of Valentine's Day. Some say that in the third century AD, there was a Roman Emperor who decided only to take unmarried men into the army. Therefore, he forbade young men from getting married, so he could recruit them into the army. But there was a priest named Valentine, who continued marrying couples in secret even though it was forbidden. So some say that he is the reason we celebrate Valentine's Day. Nevertheless, there are many other legends about Valentine's Day. So on this day, let us acknowledge the importance of a marriage.

We read here in verse 18, "Wives, be subject to your husbands…" So a wife should allow her husband to be the spiritual leader of their home. She should in no way assume that role for herself. This verse says that a wife should be subordinate and adapt herself to her husband. Why should a wife do that? Is it because her husband is better? Is it because her husband is more important? No, of course not. Verse 18b says, "…as is right and fitting and your proper duty in the Lord." So wives should be subject to their husbands because it pleases the Lord. At the same time, it doesn't mean that she has no voice and has to become a slave to her husband. It means that she should respect and honor her husband. That is very important to a man – receiving the respect, honor, and praise from his wife.

Then it says in verse 19, "Husbands, love your wives…" So husbands are to show affection to their wives. A husband is to be sympathetic toward his wife. Being sympathetic means feeling what she feels. He should listen to the words that his wife speaks and try to understand her feelings behind those words. It also says that husbands are not to be "harsh or bitter or resentful toward them." A husband should love his wife with an "agape" love, meaning he should love her unconditionally. He should always do what is best for her. It is the husband's job to make his wife happy. So he has to listen to her desires and her needs, and then work towards meeting those needs. He has to love her in the way she understands and accepts love.
