Proverbs 5:1-2
"My son, be attentive to my Wisdom [godly Wisdom learned by actual and costly experience], and incline your ear to my understanding [of what is becoming and prudent for you], that you may exercise proper discrimination and discretion and your lips may guard and keep knowledge and the wise answer [to temptation]."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis is a wonderful chapter! The father is teaching his children here and advising them to be attentive to what he is saying and incline their ears to his understanding. When you act thoughtfully and you open your mouth to speak, it should be evident that you are a person of understanding. It should be evident that you know what you are talking about. Now why should you pay any attention to this teaching? Why is it so important to act prudently and thoughtfully? Well the reason is to protect yourself from another woman. That's why you should be listening.

It says in verse 3, "For the lips of a loose woman drip honey as a honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil…" So the Bible says that another woman can be very deceptive, speaking wonderful and charming words. But we see that "in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged and devouring sword" [verse 4]. So you may go to another woman or another man, and you may feel pleasure at that point. But the end will be painful and bitter. Actually, verse 5 even says that she will bring you to the place of death. "Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold of Sheol (Hades, the place of the dead)."

Marriages often break up for a number of reasons; one could be neglect. Either the wife takes the husband for granted or the husband takes the wife for granted, and they begin to neglect one another. As a result, spouses often turn to other people to satisfy their needs. They turn to adultery, but it says here that adultery will lead you to death. There are all kinds of sicknesses that can be contracted through sexual immorality. Over 60 million people in the United States have sexually transmitted diseases. Some don't even know it. Sometimes people can even become infertile because of promiscuity. So there are many downfalls to adultery.

Then verse 6 tells us that the adulteress woman will lead you into destruction and it will come unnoticed. So the Word is teaching us here that we ought to avoid the very scenes of temptation. If there's temptation to sin in movies, don't watch those movies. If there's temptation in magazines, don't look at those magazines. Anywhere there's temptation, stay away from those scenes. If you don't and you fall into adultery, then these Scriptures tell us that you will lose your honor and other people will take your possessions, your rewards, and even your strength [verses 9-10].

Therefore, you should enjoy your own wife. Verse 15 says, "Drink waters out of your own cistern [of a pure marriage relationship], and fresh running waters out of your own well." Her love should be like fresh water to you. Then it says that you should "rejoice in the wife of your youth" [verse 18b]. How should you enjoy her? It says in verse 19 that you should be satisfied by her and that you should be drunk with her love. You should enjoy her love. Enjoying her love is so important.

It says in the Scriptures that when God wants to punish somebody, He allows them to go to another woman or to another man. That is a punishment from God. There is really no benefit in committing adultery. It only reaps disaster and destruction. So, what should you do instead? You should enjoy your own spouse. There is no destruction there. You are only to love your wife. Pray for her, love her, care for her, and enjoy her. Sexual fulfillment inside a pure and godly marriage is what's acceptable to God. But anything else will only bring destruction.
