CHARACTERISTICS OF GOD

Date: February 5

Category: New Life in God

Exodus 34:6-7
"And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord! The Lord! A God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in loving-kindness and truth, keeping mercy and loving-kindness for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but Who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children's children, to the third and fourth generation."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis is a wonderful revelation of who God is. God reveals Himself as love by forgiving and by punishing. He shows His love in both ways. 1 John 1:9 says, "If we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful and just (true to His own nature and promises) and will forgive our sins…" So God expresses His love through forgiveness of sins. But He also expresses it through punishment of sins as well. The Bible says in Proverbs that whom God loves, He disciplines.

In verse 7 of this passage in Exodus 34, God says that He will visit the iniquities of the fathers upon the children and the children's children. That is an expression of God's love. Why is He punishing us? Why is He visiting our iniquities? Well He wants us to turn back to Him.

In this self-revelation, we can see who God is. We see that the Lord is merciful and gracious. We see that He is slow to anger and abundant in loving-kindness and truth. Those are the characteristics of God. When God shows us mercy, He shows us undeserved favor, meaning He holds back punishment even though we deserve to be punished. When you confess your sins, He shows mercy to you and forgives you because Jesus has paid the penalty for our sins. God is also slow to anger, meaning He doesn't punish people right away. God is patient; He wants people to turn back to Him. That's why He is slow to anger. God is also abundant in loving-kindness, meaning He does good things for His children.

Whenever God reveals His love to us, He does it by forgiving our sins. It says in 1 Corinthians 13:5 that love "takes no account of the evil done to it [it pays no attention to a suffered wrong]." Real love forgives everything. It says in 1 Peter 4:8 that "love covers a multitude of sins [forgives and disregards the offenses of others]." Once God forgives you, He washes away your sins and forgets them. So He remembers them no more. That love, which forgives all things, is just a part of the character of God.
