Exodus 23:25-26
"You shall serve the Lord your God; He shall bless your bread and water, and I will take sickness from your midst. None shall lose her young by miscarriage or be barren in your land; I will fulfill the number of your days."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiGod gives us a commandment first and then He gives us a promise. He first says, "You shall serve the Lord your God…" That's the first thing He wants us to do. God has called us to be servants, servants of God and of people. That's the first thing that we need to do.

When I was studying theology, I was also a residential superintendent. I was cleaning and looking after this residential building to support my wife and me. There were times that I wanted to cut some corners. There were times that I wanted to slack off. I used to say to myself, "Maybe I don't have to keep it as clean as I should. Maybe I don't have to clean every little corner. Nobody would see anyway." But then God said to me, "You're serving Me." I realized that I was really working for Jesus, so regardless of whether or not people saw, I should still do my best on the job because Jesus always saw me.

The first service is doing service to God. When we do service to God, verse 25b says, "He shall bless your bread and water…" In other words, He will richly give us bread and water. He'll give us enough of everything that we need. There will never be any lack in your life. Not only that, but He says that He will remove sicknesses from your midst. When you and I serve God, we are taking measures to stay healthy. Those are the two things that God wants for you. He wants to prosper you and He wants you to be healthy. But you and I have to do our part. If you want to have bread and water and all your necessities met, then serve God.

Serving God means obeying Him, obeying what He says about working diligently, saving, and investing in order to have more than enough of everything you need. Serving God means obeying what He says in terms of keeping yourself healthy. When we serve Him, He will ensure that we have enough bread and water and that we are kept in good health.

Furthermore, it says in verse 26, "None shall lose her young by miscarriage or be barren in your land; I will fulfill the number of your days." So God will multiply you and will fulfill the length of your days, meaning He will not allow you to die young because you're serving Him. People who sin against the Lord are really shortening their days. But because you serve God, He will fulfill the number of your days.

When we serve God, God doesn't gain anything. It is you and I who gain. These promises are ours, but they are conditional upon our obedience. It's like getting a reward when you achieve something. Rewards come with work. Here, God is giving us rewards, but He wants us to do our part to earn those rewards. He wants us to serve and obey Him.
