Ezekiel 28:4-5
"With your own wisdom and with your own understanding you have gotten you riches and power and have brought gold and silver into your treasuries; by your great wisdom and by your traffic you have increased your riches and power, and your heart is proud and lifted up because of your wealth."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis is the prophet, Ezekiel speaking the word of the Lord to the city of Tyre. At the time, the city of Tyre was very rich and powerful. We can see here that riches and power go together. But how can you become rich and powerful? Well in these passages, we see that wisdom is mentioned twice. Verse 4a says, "With your own wisdom…you have gotten you riches and power…" Then verse 5a says, "By your great wisdom… you have increased your riches and power…" So wisdom is an important factor in gaining riches and power. But gaining also requires diligence. For example, along with wisdom, the word ‘traffic' is used in verse 5 as a way to gain riches and power. Traffic simply means buying and selling – maintaining a business. So your diligence and hard work is also important if you want to gain riches and power.

There are two kinds of people who will never get ahead in life. One is a person who never does what he is told, and the other is a person who only does what he is told. Those are the two types of people who will never get ahead in life. The only way you can get ahead in life is if you do over and above what you are expected. Somebody who only does what he is supposed to do usually drifts from one job to another. When companies have to lay people off, those are the people who get laid off first.

But if you are somebody who takes initiative and does more than what's expected of you, then you will progress much farther in life. So determine what is necessary to be done for a job. Don't wait to be told. When you practice that initiative and that diligence, then your job will be secure. That's how you become wealthy. That's how you gain riches and power. So when you have wisdom and understanding and when you are diligent, then you will increase in riches and power.

It's also important to notice a little warning, which is mentioned at the end of verse 5. It says that your heart can become proud and lifted up because of your wealth. That is the greatest mistake any wealthy person can make. Pride comes before the fall. So if you want to stay rich and powerful, you have to also be humble and acknowledge that God has given you everything you have. How can you acknowledge that? Well, you can acknowledge that by giving your tithes and offerings to the Lord. When you give back to God the first fruits of your increase, you are honoring God's Word and acknowledging that everything you have came from Him. When you acknowledge God in your increase, you will keep your heart humble. So wisdom, understanding, and diligence will help you to become rich and powerful, and generosity helps us to stay that way.
