SETTING GOALS

Date: January 14

Category: Prosperity

Proverbs 4:25-27
"Let your eyes look right on [with fixed purpose], and let your gaze be straight before you. Consider well the path of your feet and let all your ways be established and ordered aright. Turn not aside to the right hand or to the left; remove your foot from evil."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis passage is about setting goals – deciding ahead of time what you are going to do. It says, "Let your eyes look right on [with fixed purpose]." Goal setting is basically just deciding ahead of time what you want to accomplish in the future, whether it be years from now or in the near future. Setting goals means to chart your future. In this Scripture, you can see that once you start charting your future, you've got to keep working at it in order to achieve your goals. People who never set goals aren't able to tell whether they are winning or losing, whether they are progressing or regressing. Your life is determined by the decisions you make and the goals you set before you. The Bible says that you should never lose sight of those goals. You should always look right on with fixed purpose and your gaze should always be straight. In other words, you have to target your goal and pursue it.

Then it says that you should "consider well the path of your feet" [verse 26a]. Now that you have set a goal, consider what you are doing. Are you doing what you ought to be doing in order to achieve that goal? Let's say, for example, you are a student and you want to earn an ‘A' on your report card. You have to make sure that you are doing what is needed to achieve that grade. Everyday you ought to be studying, finishing your homework, doing extra assignments, and putting forth your best effort. Once you have set a goal, it's important to order your actions wisely to achieve that goal.

Then it says, "Let all your ways be established" [verse 26b]. Not only are you to do what you're supposed to do, but your actions have to be established. Going back to the example of you, as a student, working towards an ‘A,' you have to make sure you are completing your homework well. You have to make sure you are perfecting every assignment before you hand it in. Everything that you have set out to do in order to reach your goal needs to be established and accomplished to the best of your ability.

The next verse tells us not to allow anything to sway us off that path. It says, "Turn not aside to the right hand or to the left; remove your foot from evil" [verse 27]. So once we have our path established, we can't allow anything to distract us or take us off that path.

People who set goals are the people who achieve success in their lives. There was a study done a few years ago in regards to goal setting. After a university graduation, a speaker got up and asked the graduating class how many of them set and wrote down specific goals for themselves after graduation. Only three people raised their hands. Twenty-five years later at a class reunion, they discovered that those three people, who raised their hands, had more money than the rest of the graduating class combined. If you don't have a specific goal, you'll just wander through life with no real direction. That's why it's so important to set goals for yourself.

God wants us to set goals and keep our eyes on that goal. In other words, don't lose sight of the goal that you have set. Keep focused and take actions towards achieving that goal. They say a trip of a thousand miles starts with the first step. So, you have to start with the first step towards the direction of your goal. Do not let other things sidetrack you. Make sure your feet are established on what you're doing. Whatever it takes to achieve that goal, go after it with a whole heart, and God will help you achieve your purpose. Only people who have goals and pursue them are successful in life. Once you've reached one goal, then establish another one, an even greater goal. Little by little, you'll become a victorious person.
