A NEW HEART AND A NEW SPIRIT

Date: January 11

Category: Follow God

Ezekiel 11:19-20
"And I will give them one heart [a new heart] and I will put a new spirit within them; and I will take the stony [unnaturally hardened] heart out of their flesh, and will give them a heart of flesh [sensitive and responsive to the touch of their God], that they may walk in My statutes and keep My ordinances, and do them. And they shall be My people, and I will be their God."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiGod is promising here that He will give us a new heart and He'll put a new spirit within us. Your heart and your spirit can really be classified as the same thing. When God wants to give you a new heart, He wants to give you a new spirit. When you listen to your heart, you are listening to your spirit. So your heart and your spirit can be considered as one. God promises in verse 19a that He will "…take the stony [unnaturally hardened] heart out of their flesh, and will give them a heart of flesh [sensitive and responsive to the touch of their God]." In other words, God wants to give you a heart that will know the affection of God, a heart that will see the hand of God moving in your life.

Then it says in verse 20a, "That they may walk in My statutes and keep My ordinances, and do them." So God will change your heart and your spirit so that you will be willing to obey Him. Then it says in verse 20b, "And they shall be My people, and I will be their God." That's the only way He will be our God and we can be His people. When He is our God, He makes a covenant with us to protect us, to bless us, to prosper us, and more.

If you tried to change your heart on your own, you wouldn't succeed. It's not something you can instantly do in your own strength. It's something that God does in your heart. But how does God change your heart and your spirit? Well it says in John 6:63, "It is the Spirit Who gives life [He is the Life-giver]; the flesh conveys no benefit whatever [there is no profit in it]. The words (truths) that I have been speaking to you are spirit and life." So the words of God are spirit and life. That's how God changes our hearts –through the Word of God!

But if you don't read the Word of God and if you don't obey it, then He can't change your heart. Verse 20a of Ezekiel 11 says, "That they may walk in My statutes and keep My ordinances, and do them…" How can we walk in His ways if we don't know what they are? That's why it is so important to read the Word of God. When you read God's Word, the Spirit of God begins changing your heart. He changes your spirit. He changes the way you think and the way you feel. When we obey God, He is going to be our God and we will be His people. That's a promise from the Lord.
