THE GOODNESS OF GOD: CONCRETE EVIDENCE

Date: January 4

Category: The Goodness of God

Jeremiah 31:12-15, 17
"They shall come and sing aloud on the height of Zion and shall flow together and be radiant with joy over the goodness of the Lord – for the corn, for the juice [of the grape], for the oil, and for the young of the flock, and the herd. And their life shall be like a watered garden, and they shall not sorrow or languish any more at all. Then will the maidens rejoice in the dance, and the young men and old together. For I will turn their mourning into joy and will comfort them, and make them rejoice over their sorrow. I will satisfy fully the life of the priests with abundance [of offerings shared with them], and My people will be satisfied with My goodness, says the Lord. And there is hope for your future, says the Lord; your children shall come back to their own country."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiDuring this time, the children of Israel were in exile. They were in captivity, but God speaks to them through the prophet Jeremiah. These verses describe the goodness of God to the children of Israel and to us today as well. The goodness of God is seen through concrete evidence. For example, it says in verse 12b, "…for the corn, the juice [of the grape], for the oil, and for the young of the flock, and the herd." So the children of Israel had enough to eat. That was a signature of God's goodness. When there is nothing lacking and everybody has enough food to eat, then that is the evidence of God's goodness.

It also says in verse 12b, "And their life shall be like a watered garden, and they shall not sorrow or languish any more at all." Think of an actual garden. When it is not watered, it dries up and cannot grow. It becomes weak and stops developing. But when the garden is watered, it flourishes and becomes strong. That's what you'll be like. It says here that you won't sorrow or languish any more. In fact, it says in verse 13 that God will bring you joy. "For I will turn their mourning into joy and will comfort them, and make them rejoice over their sorrow." So God will comfort us in our sorrows.

How else is the goodness of God shown? Well verse 14 says, "I will satisfy fully the life of the priests with abundance [of offerings shared with them], and My people will be satisfied with My goodness, says the Lord." The goodness of God is shown through His provision to His servants. That's why we should support God's servants. When we do, they will have enough to provide for themselves and their families. That is another signature of God's goodness. The goodness of God is supporting His ministers.

Then it says in verse 17, "And there is hope for your future, says the Lord; your children shall come back to their own country." Before God's goodness, there wasn't any hope for the children of Israel. They were slaves in another country. But because of God's goodness, there is hope for their future. They're children will come out of captivity and return to their home country. So we can rest assured that God has good plans for our future. There is hope for our future and our children's futures.

So all of these things are evidences of God's goodness. Some people may think that God hasn't done anything for them. But the goodness of God is very concrete. We should be happy for the food we have, the ministers we have, the joy we have, and the assurance we have in a future full of hope. Those are the concrete evidences of the goodness of God in our lives.
