Luke 2:25
"Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout [cautiously and carefully observing the divine Law], and looking for the Consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiSimeon had been waiting for the Messiah to come. When Baby Jesus was brought to the temple, he had an opportunity to see Him. When he did, he was very happy. In verse 30 he said, "For with my [own] eyes I have seen Your Salvation." There are several things that are said about Simeon that are worth looking at and learning from.

The first quality that this verse mentions is righteousness. Simeon was a righteous man. In other words, he lived the way God wanted him to live. He led a life that was first of all in right standing with God and secondly in right standing with other people. His righteousness with other people was the outflow of the right standing he had with God.

In order for us to be in right standing with God, we need to confess our sins, ask Him for forgiveness, and invite Him into our hearts to be our Lord and Saviour. In 1 John 1:9 we read, "If we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful and just (true to His own nature and promises) and will forgive our sins [dismiss our lawlessness] and [continuously] cleanse us from all unrighteousness [everything not in conformity to His will in purpose, thought, and action]." God's forgiveness is not based upon our character, but upon His character. So when we sin, we are to confess our sins and allow God to wash us clean. That's how we come into right standing with God. Once we are in right standing with God, then we will be in right standing with other people.

But not only was Simeon a righteous man, he was also a devout man. Being a devout man meant that he cautiously and carefully observed the divine Law. He made sure he did what God commanded him to do. He obeyed what the Word of God said and allowed God's Word to direct his life. In other words, he made God's Word the supreme voice in his mind and his spirit. He made the Word the light for his path and the source for his wisdom. He was devoted to the Word of God.

Because he was devoted to the Word, he was looking for the Consolation of Israel, which was the Messiah. He knew that the Word of God spoke about the Messiah that was coming. So he was attentively looking for Him. But there's no way he could have been looking for the Consolation of Israel if he didn't know the Word of God. Since he knew the Word, he knew that the Messiah was coming. In other words, he made the desires, plans and purposes of God his own desires, plans and purposes.

Lastly, we read that Simeon had the Holy Spirit upon him, meaning he was filled with the Spirit of God. That's another godly quality that Simeon had. In John 6:63 we read, "It is the Spirit Who gives life [He is the Life-giver]; the flesh conveys no benefit whatever [there is no profit in it]. The words (truths) that I have been speaking to you are spirit and life." So the words of God are spirit and life. Since Simeon was filled with the Spirit of God, it means that he was filled with the words of God. In other words, God's Word was in his heart. Simeon completely gave himself to the study, meditation and application of the Word in his life.

There are so many things that each one of us can learn from Simeon. We learn that if we are filled with the Holy Spirit, then we are in right standing with God, meaning our sins have been forgiven and washed away by the blood of Jesus, and we are in right standing with people, meaning we are not in conflict with anybody. Not only that, but we are also devoted to the Word of God. In other words, we have made the heart of God, the Word of God, and the Spirit of God pre-eminent in our hearts and our spirits. So today, let us be people like Simeon, full of the Holy Spirit, righteous before God and others, and devoted to the study, meditation, and application of the Word of God in our lives.
