A CELEBRATION OF OUR SAVIOR

Date: December 25

Category: New Life in God

Luke 2:10-11
"But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people. For to you is born this day in the town of David a Savior, Who is Christ (the Messiah) the Lord!"

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiFrom past traditions, our society has come to learn about Saint Nicholas. In our culture, Saint Nicholas has been completely changed from who he really was. He was actually a very godly and generous man who was born in Turkey in 280 AD. At age 19, he became a bishop in his small village. He did many good things for other people, including helping the poor.

Nicholas died on the 6th of December in 343 AD. He became a very popular figure in the years and centuries after his death. In fact, the day of his death (December 6) became known as "Saint Nicholas Day." On that day, people gave each other gifts to celebrate.

There was also a sister named Klaas who rode through the streets on a white horse and rewarded children with goodies during the "Saint Nicholas Day" celebrations. She gave candies and toys to the children who were good.

Eventually, Saint Nicholas and Sister Klaas' traditions, from Holland, blended into one figure, and people began to adapt December 25th as their day of celebration. Shortly after the civil war in America, Saint Nicholas became known as "Santa Claus."

But Saint Nicholas really represents the giving heart of our heavenly Father. The greatest gift of all is the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ. When we look at the passage in Luke 2:10b, the angel said, "Behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people." So Christmas is for everybody. But what is Christmas? Is it just a time to receive gifts and decorate our trees? No, it is a time to celebrate Jesus! Verse 11 says, "For to you is born this day in the town of David a Savior, Who is Christ (the Messiah) the Lord!"

Jesus is the One who saves us from our sins. He came to die on the cross of Calvary and pay the penalty for our sins. Once your sins are forgiven, you become a new creation in Christ Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:17). It doesn't matter what you've done in the past, God gives you a new beginning.

Jesus is not only the Savior, but it says in Luke 2:11 that He is Christ, the Lord. If Jesus is your Lord then He is the One who leads your life. If He is our Lord, then we have to give Him total control over our thoughts, our feelings, our words, and our actions.

The key to maintaining the joy of Christmas throughout the year is really to make Jesus Christ (the anointed One) Lord over our lives. When Jesus becomes your Lord and Savior, His joy will fill your heart. So this Christmas, remind yourself that it is Christ who makes you glad. So in that gladness, do something nice for someone else.

God gave us the ultimate gift when He gave us His Son, and He did it because He loves us (John 3:16). So this Christmas, don't just think about the things you can get; think about the things that you can give. Become like Saint Nicholas who was generous and godly and who made Jesus Christ his Lord and Savior. Today, if you don't have Jesus Christ in your heart, why don't you pray a simple prayer and receive the greatest gift of all – receive everlasting life.

"Jesus, I ask you into my heart. I ask you to forgive me of my sins. Become my Lord and my Savior in Jesus mighty name. Amen."
