THE SOURCE OF OUR WORDS

Date: December 19

Category: Prosperity

Matthew 12:34b
"For out of the fullness (the overflow, the superabundance) of the heart the mouth speaks."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis passage reveals to us a great truth that is worth paying close attention to. Jesus teaches us that the words we speak have a source from where they come from. Even though you and I speak with our mouths, our mouth is not the source for our words. We use our mouths as a vehicle in communicating our words, but the actual words that we speak come from another source, a more powerful source.

Sometimes people respond in certain situations with strong words, which they regret saying afterward. But we can see from this verse that there is a short passage of time from the moment our words are released from their source and come out through our mouths. That's why we can't blame our situations or other people for the words we speak because they are not the source for our words. Therefore, they are not responsible for our words. So if that's the case, who is responsible for the words we speak? What is the source of our words?

Well Jesus says here, "For out of the fullness (the overflow, the superabundance) of the heart the mouth speaks." The source of our words is our heart. So when a situation happens, that situation needs to be processed into our mind. Then once our mind processes it, our heart has to determine what words are going to come out of our mouth in response to that situation. In other words, we have charge over what we speak. That's why we cannot blame anyone else for the words we speak.

According to this verse, the very things that you and I speak are the things that are in its fullness in our hearts. Our heart is the centre of who we are. When you fill up your mind with all kinds of thoughts and ideas and your heart is superabundantly filled with those thoughts and ideas, then those are the things that will come out through your mouth. For example, let's say you are in love with someone. Your heart becomes so full of that person that you can't stop talking about them. If you are getting married, then you're going to talk about your wedding because that's what your heart is full of. The same is true if your heart is full of negative things. The words you speak are determined by what your heart is full of.

So when you speak, you are actually revealing to others what is deep within your heart. Then the words that you speak will eventually become a reality in your life. In verse 37 we read, "For by your words you will be justified and acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned and sentenced." So you can either predict a future of hope or a future of disaster for yourself by the very words that you speak.

In the German translation, Hoffnung fuer Alle, (which means, ‘hope for all'), verse 37 says, "On your words, your future is determined." So if you want to experience failure, then all you have to do is speak failure over yourself. If you want to be sick, then just speak sickness over yourself. But if you want to be successful, then you have to speak success over your life, and if you want to be healthy, then you have to speak healing over your body. Your words will determine the outcome of your life.

That's why it's so important that we fill up our hearts with the Word of God. That way we will speak what the Word says and receive what the Word promises. In Proverbs 16:1 we read, "The plans of the mind and orderly thinking belong to man, but from the Lord comes the [wise] answer of the tongue." The wise answer of the tongue means allowing God's Word to come out from our mouths. But in order to do that, the Word must be within our hearts.

Speaking the words of God will determine a good future for us. In Jeremiah 29:11 we read, "For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome." It is so important to know what thoughts we are allowing to percolate in our minds and what ideas we are allowing to become pregnant within our hearts. Those words are certainly going to be delivered out through our mouths, and they are eventually going to determine our future. When we speak the Word of God over ourselves and other people, then that Word will become true in our lives because in Jeremiah 1:12b God said, "I am alert and active, watching over My word to perform it."
