DO NOT WORRY ABOUT TOMORROW

Date: December 17

Category: Prosperity

Matthew 6:33
"But seek (aim at and strive after) first of all His kingdom and His righteousness (His way of doing and being right), and then all these things taken together will be given you besides."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis passage is part of the Sermon on the Mount. It is found in the context where Jesus teaches us not to worry about tomorrow especially as it concerns our physical needs. In verse 34 we read, "So do not worry or be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will have worries and anxieties of its own. Sufficient for each day is its own trouble." In other words, Jesus tells us not to carry the burden of tomorrow today. We shouldn't be worried or anxious about our future. It's not to say that we shouldn't prepare for our future. If you have an exam tomorrow, today is the day to study. If you are going to retire in the future, then now is the time to start saving up for it. We should always plan and prepare for tomorrow, but we shouldn't be worried or anxious about tomorrow.

What makes it possible for us not to worry about tomorrow? Well we are to heed to what it says in verse 33, "But seek (aim at and strive after) first of all His kingdom and His righteousness (His way of doing and being right), and then all these things taken together will be given you besides." In order to keep from worrying about tomorrow, we are to keep what Jesus says to us in this verse.

The first part of this verse teaches us that we are to seek, aim, and strive after the Kingdom of God and His righteousness as a first priority. Seeking after the kingdom of God means acknowledging that Jesus is Lord over our lives. We are to recognize that He is the supreme Commander who directs us in all our ways. We are to get direction from Jesus through the Word of God and then we are to base all our decisions on the commands found in the Word. That's what it means to seek after the kingdom of God. Not only that, but we are also to seek after His righteousness. That means we are to seek after God's way of doing things and being right. We are to be in right standing with God through the cleansing of our sins by the blood of Jesus, and we are to be in right standing with people through just and proper actions. So God wants us to seek after His kingdom and His righteousness as a first priority.

Then the second part of this verse teaches us that once we do all of those things, everything else taken together will be given to us. This includes the necessities of life such as food, clothing, and shelter, but it also includes the extra things that we want as well. God didn't say that we shouldn't work in order to have those things. God said that we shouldn't make those things the priority of our lives. He wants us to make Him our first priority. Once we do that, then everything else will be added to us.

As we focus on God, His Word and pleasing Him by obeying His Word, then that obedience is going to connect us with the anointing of the Word of God. Then as we walk in that anointing, we are going to receive creative ideas and make wise and prudent choices about our lives. Those wise choices will bring us the blessings that we need in order to provide our basic necessities and even our wants. Then once we have all the things we need, we will not be worried or anxious about tomorrow. There is a qualitative difference in how we live our lives when we make God our first priority.

But if you are worried or anxious about tomorrow, then that is a clear sign that you haven't made God's kingdom and His righteousness the priority of your life. If you haven't made God first in your life, then you haven't obeyed all of God's commandments. If you haven't obeyed all of God's commandments, then you don't have the blessing of God that will enable you to provide for your basic needs. That's why you worry about tomorrow. So if that is you, then let today be the day that you make the conscious decision to put God above everything else. Let us all make God's kingdom and His righteousness our first priority. Then let us allow Him to reveal to us how He wants us to take care of the essentials of our lives, so that we don't have to worry.
