1 Samuel 18:14-15
"David acted wisely in all his ways and succeeded, and the Lord was with him. When Saul saw how capable and successful David was, he stood in awe of him."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiBefore David became king of Israel, he was a very good shepherd. He did everything he had to do in order to protect his father's sheep. When a lion or a bear came, he defeated them. Later on, he protected Israel by defeating Goliath. Throughout David's life, he achieved many great things. In verse 5a we read, "And David went out wherever Saul sent him, and he prospered and behaved himself wisely." That's very similar to verse 14a where it says, "David acted wisely in all his ways and succeeded." So the reason why David was so successful was that he acted wisely.

The term, "act wisely" in Hebrew is "sakal," which can be translated in many different ways. It can be translated as wise action, being prudent, causing oneself to prosper, and to circumspect. So David did all of these things. He was a learner who constantly tried to find new ways to improve himself in order to become successful. Also, verse 14a says that he acted wisely in all his ways. The term, "all his ways" represents his direction and his course of life. In every decision that David made, he acted wisely. So in everything that you and I do, we need to practice wise action. It only takes one foolish action to destroy everything in your life. In the same way one word from God can change your life for the better or neglecting one word from God can lead you to destroy your life.

Then we read in verse 14 that because David acted wisely in all his ways, he succeeded and God was with him. In other words, the wisdom of any action we take is evident through our success and the presence of God in our lives. So if you are not succeeding at what you're doing, then it means that you are not acting wisely. If you are failing at something, then it's time to change your actions and line them up with what will bring you success. That means learning from other people who are succeeding in that very area that you want to succeed in, and doing what they did so that you will become successful as well.

Most of us want to succeed in every area of our lives. But the major reason why some of us are not succeeding in certain areas is that we are not acting wisely. Often, we are acting in a foolish way, or we are acting wisely in one area but foolishly in another area. It only takes one foolish mistake to ruin your success. That's why it is important to act wisely in all areas of your life, just as David acted wisely in all his ways. That's why he was successful.

Then in verse 15 we read, "When Saul saw how capable and successful David was, he stood in awe of him." We can see here that success is something that people can see. Some people fool themselves in believing that they are successful when there is nothing fruitful in their lives to prove their success. But your success is something that other people will take notice of. In this case, Saul saw how capable David was and was amazed at him. Also in verse 30b we read, "David had more success and behaved himself more wisely than all Saul's servants, so that his name was very dear and highly esteemed." Again, we can see that success will draw the attention of others.

Maybe I can ask you, how much success would you like to have? How much success are you going to achieve in your life? Who determines the measure and greatness of your success? Each and every one of us is responsible for our own success. We are the ones who determine how prosperous and blessed we will be. Nobody ever handed success over to David on a silver platter. David had to work in order to achieve it, and he did so by acting wisely. So if you and I want to be successful in life, then we need to do what David did and implement wise actions in all our ways. Then God will be with us and we will be successful.
