Ruth 4:11c
"May you do worthily and get wealth (power) in Ephratah and be famous in Bethlehem."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis is the same blessing that was spoken to Rachel and Leah because from them came the twelve tribes of Israel. But in this verse, the elders of Israel spoke this blessing to Boaz and his wife, Ruth. Later on in the New Testament as we read about the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew 1:5, we notice that Ruth was mentioned there as part of His linage. So Ruth was a very significant figure in the history of Israel. Today, let us examine what this blessing means.

First it says, "May you do worthily." In other words, the blessing is to do worthily, meaning to be active and diligent in honourable work. This is something that each and every one of us should take to heart. We should all pursue a goal of being diligent and active as we do worthily work. Worthily work means doing something that will make a difference in someone else's life.

Sometimes the best way of determining what would be a worthily action is by examining the end from the beginning. In other words, we should ask ourselves, "Where will this action lead me? And will this action be something worth remembering – something that God will appreciate, I will appreciate, and others will appreciate?" Those are the questions we should be asking ourselves if we are to look at the end from the beginning.

When we engage ourselves in a meaningful business or job, we are making a contribution in society. The primary purpose of any service that we do, whether in a job or business, is not to provide an income for ourselves (even though income will be generated from our work). The primary purpose of our work is to help other people by meeting some of their needs. For example, the clothing industry is meeting our need for clothes to wear. The food industry is meeting our need for food to eat. The housing industry is meeting our need for shelter. So regardless of what product or service we provide, we should always be meeting some kind of need. When you and I meet enough people's needs, God will meet our needs. Our job will be secure because we are meeting a need.

Then this verse says, "and get wealth." Some people want to get wealth before they participate in worthily actions. But it doesn't happen that way. Work is required before wealth. Not just that, but we need to go the extra mile. In other words, we should ask ourselves, "What does my employer need in order to succeed?" Then whatever he needs done, we should do. When he sees our extra effort, then he will reward us. We will always move ahead when we meet the needs of other people. But on the other hand, if we were people who cut corners at work, then when it's time to lay people off, we would be the first to go. When it's time for promotions, we would be forgotten for a raise. Wealth can only come after work.

The majority of people who have become rich did not focus on becoming rich. They focussed on meeting the customers' needs. They focussed on producing the best product possible. They focussed on perfecting their skills to provide the best service they can for others. Because they focussed on the customer, people came back to them for more of those products and services. That's how wealth is created. That's why it's so important not to focus on how to get rich, but to focus on how to meet the needs of others.

Then according to this verse, that wealth creates power. In other words, we will become powerful and influential in society. The last part of this verse says, "and be famous in Bethlehem." So others will take notice of us because we have offered an important product or service and because we have generated wealth and power. But it's important to notice the order of this blessing. First we are to do worthily and meet the needs of others. Then we will get wealth and power when we go the extra mile and do more than required. Then finally, we will become well known and famous. It cannot happen in any other order but this. So today, let us apply this principle is all our work.
