Joshua 24:15d
"But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis is Joshua speaking to the Israelites at the end of his life. He is telling them that he and everyone in his house have decided to serve the Lord. It's easier to understand this passage if we read the previous portions of this verse. In verse 15b Joshua said, "Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve." In other words, the Israelites had to make a decision about whom they wanted to serve. Then in verse 15c we read, "Whether the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell." So there were a number of options that the Israelites had and they had the freedom to choose whomever they wanted. Then we come to verse 15d where Joshua said, "But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."

This statement that Joshua made is very similar to a statement that Elijah made in 1 Kings 18:21, "Elijah came near to all the people and said, How long will you halt and limp between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him! But if Baal, then follow him. And the people did not answer him a word." Also in Matthew 6:24 Jesus said, "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will stand by and be devoted to the one and despise and be against the other. You cannot serve God and mammon (deceitful riches, money, possessions, or whatever is trusted in)." So it's impossible to serve two gods at once. We all have to make a decision about which god to serve. That is a choice that faces each and every one of us.

We can see from this passage that Joshua chose to serve the Lord. As we are faced with the option of serving many different things, God wants us to serve Him. Anyone that we worship other than God is idolatry. God should be the supreme commander of our lives. He should be the standard by which we judge everything else. We should base our choices and our direction in life on God Himself and His Word.

Remember this: if you are not serving the Lord, then you are serving someone else, which is the devil. There is no middle ground. If you do not fill up your heart with the words, thoughts, and Spirit of God, then you are filling it up with the words, thoughts, and spirit of the devil. We cannot operate on an empty heart. Our heart is always filled up with something. Now whether our heart will be filled with God or with something else is a choice that we have to make. We have to make a conscious decision, like Joshua did, to serve the Lord. It's not something that God will push us to do. Even when God calls us to service, we have the freedom to choose whether or not we are going to submit. God will not force us.

When Joshua challenged the Israelites, they made the proper decision. In Joshua 24:23-24 we read, "Then put away, said he, the foreign gods that are among you and incline your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel. The people said to Joshua, the Lord our God we will serve; His voice we will obey." So serving God means putting away all foreign gods. So we have to say, "no" to the things, which are Satanic. Not just that, but we are to incline our hearts to the Lord. So once we reject everything that is not from God, we are to embrace everything that is from God. We are to have a favourable approach to the things of God. That's what it means to incline our hearts to the Lord.

There are many different voices all around us. But God wants us to obey His voice. The choice that the Israelites made was to obey the voice of the Lord. So today, let us be people who determine to put away anything that is contrary to God's Word. Let us be people who will incline our hearts to the Lord, and let us be people who will obey God's voice only.
