REJECT FALSE PROPHETS

Date: December 2

Category: Follow God

Deuteronomy 13:4
"You shall walk after the Lord your God and [reverently] fear Him, and keep His commandments and obey His voice, and you shall serve Him and cling to Him."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis verse is a directive for us to know where our trust, fear, and reliance should be placed. The previous verses teach us where our trust, fear, and reliance should not be placed. Let us examine that element first. In verses 1-3a we read, "If a prophet arises among you, or a dreamer of dreams, and gives you a sign or a wonder and the sign or the wonder he foretells to you comes to pass, and if he says, Let us go after other gods – gods you have not known – and let us serve them, you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or to that dreamer of dreams." In other words, there will be prophets and teachers who will rise up with different ideas, and they will try to sway us away from the truth of the knowledge of God. When we encounter such teachers, we are not to listen to them.

There may even be some prophets with signs and wonders that will come to pass, but it doesn't necessarily mean they're from God. There may be some teachers with interesting ideas and philosophies about life and eternity, but it doesn't necessarily mean they're from God. Anyone who tries to lead us away from the truth in the Word of God is not from God. Those are the people we should not put our trust, fear, and reliance in. Instead, we are to trust, fear and rely upon God.

Then in verse 3b we read, "For the Lord your God is testing you to know whether you love the Lord your God with all your [mind and] heart and with your entire being." So God wants to know if we are going to hold on to Him and His truth when we are faced in that kind of situation. If we follow other teachers and begin to worship other gods, then that is a sign that we really don't love the Lord God with all of our hearts. That's why we are to reject anything that leads us away from God.

Instead, we are to do exactly what it says in verse 4, "You shall walk after the Lord your God and [reverently] fear Him, and keep His commandments and obey His voice, and you shall serve Him and cling to Him." So God wants us to walk after Him, meaning we should allow His words to be the only words that govern how we live our lives. Also, God wants us to live in reverent fear of Him. In other words, we are to honour and respect God in that we will keep His commandments and obey His voice. When we do all of those things, then our obedience is a sign that we truly love God because we serve Him and cling to Him. That should be our purpose, desire, and longing – to serve God. We are not to stray away from God by listening to false teachers.

Actually in Matthew 7:15, Jesus said, "Beware of false prophets, who come to you dressed as sheep, but inside they are devouring wolves." In other words, false prophets may appear nice on the outside, but on the inside, they are deceptive and destructive. So Jesus warns us to beware of them. But how will we know whether someone is a false prophet? Well in verse 16a Jesus said, "You will fully recognize them by their fruits." The fruit of a person represents a person's actions. So in order to recognize whether someone is a false prophet, examine his actions. Are his actions in line with the Word of God? Do his fruits bring glory and honour to God? That's how you will recognize a false prophet.

But in order to do that, you and I need to know the Word of God. We need to know what God says about false prophets in order to recognize a false prophet. We need to know the words of the true Teacher, which is Jesus, before we can recognize the words of a false teacher. That's why it's so important to read God's Word. The Word of God is the mirror in which we judge ourselves and it is the standard to which we determine whether someone is from God or not. So today, let us put our trust, fear, and reliance in God and let us take His Word into our hearts in order that we might recognize a prophet who is not from God.
