"My son, eat honey, because it is good, and the drippings of the honeycomb are sweet to your taste. So shall you know skillful and godly Wisdom to be thus to your life; if you find it, then shall there be a future and a reward, and your hope and expectation shall not be cut off."
It's very interesting how these verses follow after another. Verse 13a says, "My son, eat honey, because it is good…" This is advice from the Bible that we should follow. Honey is very healthy for us to eat. We should all have about one teaspoon of honey every day. Not only is honey good for us but also it's very sweet. It says in verse 13b, "..and the drippings of the honeycomb are sweet to your taste." So our tongue is satisfied by the sweetness of honey. Then we read in verse 14a, "So shall you know skillful and godly Wisdom…" In the same way, honey is sweet to our tongues, skillful and godly wisdom is sweet to our spirits. When you take a teaspoon of honey and put it in your mouth, that honey starts to melt. As you swallow it, that honey goes inside of you and becomes a part of you. That's how we should know wisdom. We should take it into our lives and allow it to become a part of us. In the same way honey is healthy and sweet for our bodies, wisdom is healthy and sweet for our lives.
Then we read in the second part of verse 14, "..if you find it, then shall there be a future and a reward…" In other words, you will have a future because of that wisdom. That skillful and godly wisdom will cause you to think about your future, plan for your future, and make appropriate choices for your future. That's why if you find wisdom, you will have a good future. Some people say, "I'm too young to be thinking about retirement. Why should I be thinking about that?" But that's something that we should think about while we are young. If we don't, then retirement will come and we won't be prepared for it. By then, it'll be too late. So wisdom will cause us to be prudent about our futures. The key to success in anything in life is preparation.
According to this verse, skillful and godly wisdom has its own reward for us as well. There are many good benefits that come from gaining wisdom. That's why we should seek after skillful and godly wisdom before riches. If we find wisdom, then we will have a future and a reward, which will be full of success and riches.
Then the rest of verse 14 says, "..and your hope and expectation shall not be cut off." In other words, you are going to have hope for the future. Regardless of the obstacles that come your way, you are still going to hope in God and trust that He will help you become victorious. Also, your expectation will not be cut off, meaning they will be fulfilled. It's so important to have good expectations in your life. Most of the time, that is what you will receive. If you expect to succeed, then you'll succeed. If you're afraid you'll fail, then you'll probably fail. This is in anything in life. That's why you should check your expectations. Are you expecting good things to happen? Are you expecting to succeed? Then skillful and godly wisdom will ensure those expectations will come to pass. Are you expecting to fail? Then that fear will cause failure to become a reality in your life.
Your expectations have a lot to do with your desires and goals. You must first have a desire to achieve something specific. Then you have to determine to achieve it, meaning you make a specific goal. Now that you've made a specific goal, you have an expectation. You expect to reach that specific goal. And skillful and godly wisdom is what will then help you do so. That's why it says here that if we find wisdom, then our hope and our expectation will not be cut off, meaning we will not be disappointed. We will achieve our specific goals. If we expect success then wisdom will help us become successful.
So we can learn a lot from the comparison made in these verses. Just as we should eat honey because it is good for us and sweet to our taste, we should take in skillful and godly wisdom as well. Wisdom is good for us and sweet to our spirits. Wisdom is what will give us a future and a reward. Wisdom is what will cause our hope and expectation not to be cut off. But that's only possible if we find it. So that means we have to seek after it. The Bible says in Matthew 7:7 that if we keep on seeking then we will find what we've been seeking for. Once we find wisdom, then we will reap the benefits from it.
