BEING A MAN
Date: May 17
1 Kings 2:2-4
"I go the way of all the earth. Be strong and show yourself a man; keep the charge of the Lord your God, walk in His ways, keep His statutes, His commandments, His precepts, and His testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may do wisely and prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn, that the Lord may fulfill His promise to me, saying, If your sons take heed to their way, to walk before Me in truth with all their heart and mind and with all their soul, there shall not fail you [to have] a man on the throne of Israel."
This is King David speaking to his son, Solomon. He says, "I go the way of all the earth." That means, "I'm going to die." King David was quite old at this point. He knew he was going to die, but notice what he says to his son. "Be strong and show yourself a man" [verse 2b]. Then he goes on to explain how Solomon can show himself a man. Anyone who wants to be a man needs to follow these instructions found here in the Word of God. It doesn't matter what society says or what other people say about manhood. This is what the Bible calls a man.
First of all, you have to keep the charge of the Lord your God. In other words, make sure you keep what God commanded. It says that we should walk in His ways. That means you should live in the way He wants you to live. Then it instructs us to keep His statutes, His commandments, His precepts, and His testimonies [verse 3a]. That's the first step to being a man. You have to connect your life with the Word of God. Read it, meditate upon it, and obey it.
The second part of verse 3 says, "that you may do wisely and prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn." The second step to being a man is acting wisely. But there is no way you can act wisely if you don't read the Word of God or live the way it tells you to live. So we need the Scriptures to know how to act wisely. Without the Word of God, we could still accomplish many things, but they would all be foolish things. But, if we take the Word of God and do what it commands, we are going to act wisely.
Verse 3b also says, "and prosper in all that you do..." The third step to being a man is prospering. After spending time with God by reading His Word and acting upon it, you will then act wisely. As a result of acting wisely, you will prosper in all that you do.
So it really doesn't matter what you decide to do in life. That's your choice. God gives you the ability to choose what you want to do, who you want to marry, where you want to live, and so on. But how you do it and whether or not you prosper in it depends on your relationship with God. We act wisely when we spend time with God because God teaches us how to act. He tells us what is good for us.
So the first step to being a man is to keep the charge of the Lord, walk in His ways, and keep His commandments. When we do that, the second step is acting wisely through the instruction that God gives us in His commandments. Then once we act wisely, we enter into the third step, which is prosperity. The last part of this verse says that when you do that, the Lord will fulfill what He promised you. You'll always be a leader. So keeping the Word of God results in wise activity, and doing the wise activity results in prosperity. Those are the principles that are needed to be a man.
