"It is the Spirit Who gives life [He is the Life-giver]; the flesh conveys no benefit whatever [there is no profit in it]. The words (truths) that I have been speaking to you are spirit and life."
This passage is one of the most significant passages in the Bible. The words of Jesus have tremendous bearing upon everything in our lives. He says here, "It is the Spirit Who gives life [He is the Life-giver]." So the life that is within us comes from the Spirit of God. Life doesn't come from our bodies or our minds. Therefore we cannot come to God, Who is the Life-giver, with our bodies and we cannot understand God with our minds. We can offer our bodies as a living sacrifice that is holy and acceptable to God (Romans 12:1), meaning we can use our bodies to serve God. But we cannot come to God in our bodies. We can renew our minds with the Word of God (Romans 12:2), so that our minds will choose to love and serve Him. But we cannot understand God with our minds. You can try as hard as you want to come to God with your body and understand God with your mind, but you will never be able to.
Jesus says here that it is the Spirit Who gives life. When you become born-again, meaning you accept Jesus Christ as your personal Savior and Lord, that is the moment that God forgives you of your sins. When He does that, He plants His Holy Spirit within your spirit, reviving your spirit and allowing you to now be able to communicate with God. God doesn't plant His Spirit into your mind or your body; He plants it into your spirit. Although your body then becomes the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19), it is your spirit that allows you to fellowship with God.
So if you want to live a life that is pleasing to God, a life that brings abundance to you, a life that is full of joy, peace, and success, then you need the Spirit of God who is the Life-giver. You need to listen to that Spirit in your life. You can't just listen to what others say. You have to listen to the voice of God, which is His Holy Spirit within you. There is no way you can live a life that is pleasing to God or a life that is victorious without the Spirit of God. It's impossible.
Jesus also says here, "the flesh conveys no benefit whatever [there is no profit in it]." In the Gospel of John, it is interesting to notice how the word "spirit" is used in comparison to the word "flesh." The two words are antonyms of each other, meaning they are opposite. So the word, "flesh" does not represent the physical body here. It represents a position that is the direct opposite of the position of God. So everything that God says, the flesh will argue against. The flesh and the spirit are in constant opposition to one another. That's why when you hear something that is contradictory to the Word of God then you have to reject it because it is from the flesh. Jesus says that the flesh conveys no benefit whatsoever.
Then Jesus says, "The words (truths) that I have been speaking to you are spirit and life." So the Spirit of God is the Life-giver. The words of Jesus are spirit and life. In 1 Peter 1:23 we read: "Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever." (KJV). So in order to have the Spirit of God bring us eternal life, we need the words of God. The more of the Word of God we have in our hearts, the more of the Spirit of God we have. The more of the Spirit of God we have, the more of an abundance of life we will have. There is a significant connection between the Spirit of God, the words of Jesus, and us having life more abundantly (eternal life).
In John 17:3 we read, "And this is eternal life: [it means] to know (to perceive, recognize, become acquainted with, and understand) You, the only true and real God, and [likewise] to know Him, Jesus [as the] Christ (the Anointed One, the Messiah), Whom You have sent." Eternal life means understanding God the Father and God the Son, and you receive that understanding by the Holy Spirit through the words of Jesus. So today, let's adhere to the Holy Spirit and His Word because it is the Spirit who is our Life-giver.
