BIBLICAL GUIDES TO INVESTMENT

Date: August 13

Category: Prosperity

Ecclesiastes 11:1-2, 4, 6
"Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days. Give a portion to seven, yes, even [divide it] to eight, for you know not what evil may come upon the earth… He who observes the wind [and waits for all conditions to be favourable] will not sow, and he who regards the clouds will not reap… In the morning sow your seed, and in the evening withhold not your hands, for you know not which shall prosper, whether this or that, or whether both alike will be good."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiHere the Bible teaches us the guides to investing. I will lay out four basic principles which I've learned from the Word of God and that I've applied in my own financial life and that have served me quite well so that from age 46 I've become financially independent. It took me fifteen years investing primarily in real estate to get to that point. During the first couple of years we were denying ourselves many things: no holidays, no restaurants, no purchase of new clothing or furniture etc. but it all paid off big time. Today I am not afraid of tomorrow or how I will live and provide for my family or myself.

I believe that anybody who has achieved financial freedom has applied these four principals at different levels of their investment strategy and as a result have achieved financial freedom. I believe that when these four principles are applied by anybody who would be disciplined enough would be able to achieve the same financial freedom.

Principal # 1 - TIME

It says in verse 1, "Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days." Investments do not grow instantly by pressing a magical button. Investments grow in many days, meaning they grow in time. TIME is the most important factor in investing.

Here is a simple mathematical calculation that indicates how you could become a millionaire as you earn 12% per year on your investments and re-invest the earnings:

$1,000 at birth in 58 years becomes one million;

$3 per day in 40 years becomes one million;

$290 per month in 30 years becomes one million;

$1,010 per month in 20 years becomes one million;

$4,500 per month in 10 years becomes one million;

$12,300 per month in 5 years becomes one million.

So the greatest strategy in investment is time. The earlier you start, the better the opportunity you have for growth and the lesser amount you will need. You could start today with only $3 a day. Ask any financial advisor and that's what he/she will tell you: time is the most important factor in investment growth.

Principal #2 - DIVERSIFICATION

There's also a second aspect that's important as well. In verse 2 we read, "Give a portion to seven, yes, even [divide it] to eight, for you know not what evil may come upon the earth." In other words, your investments should be DIVERSIFIED, meaning there should be a variety of different investment vehicles. Some people take it too far and diversify their investments too much, and other people don't diversify enough. But this verse says here that we should divide portions to seven or eight different investment vehicles.

That's the second rule of investment. Some of those vehicles can be your home, for example. Another investment vehicle could be your government and company pension plans. Other vehicles could be real-estate investments, various commodity and industry securities, etc. These are all just examples. Some of these vehicles do well and some of them don't. That's why you have to pray and ask God to guide you in terms of what investments to get involved in. Search through the Scriptures and ask God to give you wisdom to know what to invest in. And God will guide you and help you to make wise choices. I've personally invested in real estate since 1988 and have experienced that it provides me with excellent and secure, though conservative returns.

Principle #3 - SOW AT ALL TIMES

Then it says in verse 4, "He who observes the wind [and waits for all conditions to be favorable] will not sow, and he who regards the clouds will not reap." So we aren't supposed to watch the conditions and wait for times to be favorable to sow. If we do that, then we won't sow at all. WE ARE TO SOW AT ALL TIMES. We don't know what's going to happen tomorrow. No financial advisor can predict the future.

So we are to sow whether the conditions are favorable or not. You don't look for favorable times to give to God. You give God what's owed to Him, your tithes and offerings. You don't look for favorable times to save money for your future, which should be at least double (twenty plus percent) of whatever you give to God (cf. Genesis 47:24) and if you need to delay gratification or deny yourself of some things at present in order to achieve it, do it. You do that with each and every pay cheque. So you don't wait for favorable times to sow into your investment (twenty plus percent of your total income). You just do it. Once you've prayed and sought God for direction and He has led you to make the right decision, then sow into that investment.

Principal #4 - START INVESTING 20% PLUS TODAY

It says in verse 6, "In the morning you sow your seed, and in the evening withhold not your hands, for you know not which shall prosper, whether this or that, or whether both alike will be good." That's why we have to be patient and let time take its course. That's why we have to have seven or eight different investments. That's why we don't look for favorable times to sow.

It's all because we don't know what will happen in the future. We don't know which investments will prosper, which will not, or if all of them will. All we can do is pray, seek the Lord for guidance, sow our seeds, and trust God. Eventually we will reap a positive result. So decide right now to START INVESTING TODAY for your own future - twenty plus percent of your total income (cf. Genesis 47:24) which should be the double of whatever you give unto the Lord. That's the Biblical teaching of investments. So today let's learn from these passages, and let's invest according to how the Bible directs us to.
