Proverbs 12:27, Proverbs 13:4
"The slothful man does not catch his game or roast it once he kills it, but the diligent man gets precious possessions."
"The appetite of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, but the appetite of the diligent is abundantly supplied."
We can learn the same message by reading both of these verses. This teaching is about the difference between diligence and laziness and the different outcomes that each action will bring. First it says in Proverbs 12:27, "The slothful man does not catch his game…" In other words, lazy people don't go to work. Or when they do work, they don't do what they need to do, to do it well, in order to keep their job and benefit from their labor. As we read in the second part of verse 27, "or roast it once he kills it…" So even if the slothful man catches his game and kills it, he doesn't even roast it so he can eat it. In other words, he doesn't do what it takes to benefit from his labor.
Then we read, "but the diligent man gets precious possessions." So those who work hard will receive precious possessions. People who are successful didn't just become successful by chance. Success came to them because of their diligent work. But a slothful man won't gain success. That's why we read in Proverbs 13:4a, "The appetite of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, but the appetite of the diligent is abundantly supplied." There are many people who wish to be rich. There are many people who wish to be successful. But there are only a few who actually become rich and successful. It's because they are people who are diligent and work hard to reach their goals. That's why their appetite is abundantly supplied. God supplies our needs through our own diligence. When we work, we will be supplied for. If we don't work, then God cannot provide for us.
In Proverbs 15:19 we read, "The way of the sluggard is overgrown with thorns [it pricks, lacerates, and entangles him], but the way of the righteous is plain and raised like a highway." So along with gaining financial successes, a diligent person will also have clear direction about his life. It says here that a diligent person will have clarity about his life and his future, while a lazy person will only be pricked, lacerated, and entangled with all of life's situations. So the pathway of a lazy person isn't clear and direct. But a diligent person will always have clear direction. Following that clear direction will lead that person into success.
Proverbs 24:30-34 says, "I went by the field of the lazy man, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; and, behold, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles were covering its face, and its stone wall was broken down. Then I beheld and considered it well; I looked and received instruction. Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep – so shall your poverty come as a robber, and your want as an armed man."
Some people are poor because they don't want to work. Not all poor people are lazy though. There are some who are poor because of war or some other natural disaster. And our job is to help those people. But if you are a healthy man or woman and there is work to be found, then there is no excuse to be poor. Lazy people are poor because they expect to succeed without work. But that's not the way success comes. Success doesn't come before work. It only comes before work in the dictionary. Houses and cars won't come to us unless we have money, and money won't come to us unless we work! The key to getting out of poverty is to get to work.
So dear friend, a great measure of whether you become rich or poor depends on you. Diligence and hard work is the key to success. So when you're at your workplace, think about what you can do to bless the employer and the company you work for. Think of how you can take the initiative to do more than what's expected. Then do it! That diligence is what brings you job stability, raises, and promotions. So don't be like the slothful person who just slumbers. Be a diligent person. Go out there and work! Then success will follow you!
